  1. "I..." Zane studied the face of the blond woman, then back up to his master's tearful face. He thought about how it would feel to lose track of his own beloved wife. He thought seriously about the questions he was posed about Kenobi's fitness to be a Jedi, a Master, a teacher.

"If there's anything I've done in my life, Ken...er, Master Kenobi, it's know the difference between good bets and bad ones. I've got a sense for it, it's as reliable to me as my eyes or my hearing. If my sense tells me that I can count on you, that's all I need.

"I uh...I can't speak for everyone else, but that's me." He quieted down a moment. "Hey, why don't I make you a deal. You show me every trick you know with the Force, I'll call in a favor or two I won awhile back. I don't know how much I can do, but maybe we can get a lead about where she is. No one's entirely invisible, even in this giant universe of ours.

    "Sound like a deal?"

  2. "You bet. I made a few good buddies on the Pro circuit who I still can count on to have my back and stuff. And of course, the woman I went legit for." Zane grinned and held up his left hand, showing a gold and silver two-tone wedding band. "I've been very close to her for a long time. Close enough that I gave up the Pro Circuit for her. It wasn't that she expected it, it's just one of those things I felt was right.

"Why do you ask?" Zane looked over Kenobi's shoulder at the picture frame.

  3. Zane dragged a finger across one of the walls, rubbing the dust in between his fingers. He wandered farther into the house, checking it out while listening to whatever his master decided to say about this place. Kenobi didn't seem like the type to be terribly open, which made Zane all the more curious.

"What is this, your childhood home?"

  4. "I was just wondering, 'cause it seemed like emotions were spiking around there. I'd hate to think that, just as I'm getting involved, the game goes out of fashion because people get into fueds and such.

"But that's cool that it's getting figured out."

  5. Zane put his hands behind his head, stretching randomly as he addressed his master. "Well, you said you had some important business to attend to and kind of brought me along by default. We ought to go back, though, make sure not TOO many people have vandalized by ship.

"I was wondering what happened back there. I got the impression there's dissension in the ranks?"

  6. The sizzle of blaster-scorched flesh was never a sound that brought joy to Zane, especially when his flesh is giving off that delightful burning smell. He clentched his teeth in a weak attempt to keep from seeming too choked up about being shot by his new mentor. "This a usual method of teaching Force to people? Doesn't seem too peaceful or that."

Zane tried to remember back to those times when he didn't feel right about a bet, just an instinct that turned out to be right. He had been told once that a lot of early Jedi could sense danger before it happened, and he wondered if that's what they meant. He looked down, keeping his leg off the ground a little so he wouldn't try to support his weight on the weakened leg.

After a few moments of trying to summon some kind of focus past the hole in his thigh, trying to see what it might feel like to simply "heal" a blaster wound. "Feels pretty much like any other blaster wound I've had..." It wasn't changing, wasn't tingling or anything, just burned quietly for the minute or so he tried to use any instinct that he could remember. He had felt something before, it was there, but ultimately...

    Nothing.

He wondered if this meant he failed or that he was going to be tutored more by this other Kenobi.

  7. "Kenobi?" Zane gave the Jedi the once over and grinned. "What cosmic luck!

"Not to put too fine a point on it, my friend, but I've been in search of someone to teach me how to use the Force. I've heard, through some of my sources, about the Jedi and some of their more prestigious members, and the name Kenobi came up in conversation.

"So this is a roundabout way of saying, could you teach me how to use and control the Force?" Zane kept his eyes in line with Kenobi's, using his years of pazzack as a primer in how to be natural in front of powerful people.

  8. "What in the hell?" Zane, the somewhat stocky "reformed" gambler, stepped down out of his Crash Wildfire and surveyed one of the wings. What he saw did not please him in the least-the starboard laser cannon was scorched and scraped, probably in need of repair or at least a new paint job. The navigation computer had given him the notion that there was clear ground for a good three hundred meters, but it had apparently lied; it took a miracle to avoid getting the entire wing ripped off by the hill guilty of scarring his beloved ship. "I swear, that computer's trying to kill me..." He shrugged, secured his ship, and found his way into the base.

He had used a few favors and did a few more to track down one who could teach him to control the "feelings" and "good luck" he had. Given the reputation of the man he sought, Zane wasn't entirely sure of their compatability, but he wasn't expecting "warm fuzzies" anyway. The less than a handful of Jedi he had seen tended to be consumed with a code of ethics more rigid than a ship's hull. He was looking for someone who could think outside the box, but not so far out that he could be mistaken for those other guys, the Sith.

Zane entered the base, ready to meet his contact, his new mentor in a game not everyone can play: the game of Jedi Training.
