With minimal warning, the dark mass that was the Kyber class Star Destroyer Herløv and a small cluster of ships proudly bearing the symbol of the glorious Sith Empire on their hulls shot out of hyperspace and into the blackness of realspace. Despite the size of her ship, Qaela's eyes quickly fixated on the truly titanic mass of ancient durasteel that hovered before her fleet. Centerpoint didn't truly hold any direct tactical importance in the grand scheme of things, but it was central to the Twin Worlds of Tralus and Talus which were the weaker of the defended worlds within the Corellian System and would serve as a good launching point to invade the rest of the system.

Immediately after reverting from hyperspace, the squadrons of bombers and heavy interceptors began to stream out of the Herløv's launch bay and form up to prepare for their missions. A mixture of dozens of assault shuttles loaded with troops and three score medium sized cargo transports reverted out of hyperspace behind the main fleet moments later and began orienting themselves for a run against Centerpoint Station once the way was determined to be clear. Qaela didn't expect there to be a tremendous amount of resistance on the Station itself, but it needed to be claimed nonetheless because she had a purpose for it. Her troops would blitz the station and its meager defenders, secure its civilian population in Hollowtown, and then use the Station as a rally and launch point for invasions throughout the Corellian System's Five Worlds. The Twins would first fall in one swift action, then the rest. Probes were shot out all around the fleet and Centerpoint Station itself to both scan for hostiles while also coordinating fire control at enemy ships.

Qaela wasn't completely experienced in naval combat, but the officers onboard her ship under the command of Captain Geratos were and she wasn't so prideful as to demand control over how the battle proceeded. She had long ago learned what her strengths and weaknesses were and how to use others to fill in the gaps in her ability. When Corellia fell to the Sith, she would receive glory enough to share with those who helped her do so, far more than if she allowed her pride to get in her way and cost the Empire troops, ships, and pride.

This was the first move of a strategy she had put together with her commanders. As was more akin to her personal style, it wouldn't rely just on blunt firepower and force as was the wont of the Sith Empire, but rather on deception, guile, and misdirection to keep her enemies at bay and guide them into the slaughter. The Sith would claim the Corellian System one way or another: it would be far better for them if its conqueror was Qaela Darksong rather than the far heavier hand of other Sith Lords.

"Take the Station," she ordered calmly. "Slay only those who resist, preserve as much as you can. We are here to add to the Glory of the Empire, not to create pointless destruction. Our Dark Lord wishes a prize to build his Imperial Might, not a pile of molten rubble and ash." Those who fought under her command were carefully selected. The most brutal of the soldiers in the Empire were excluded: she wanted only those who shared her own vision of building a mighty empire under the confines and philosophy of The Balance and who could restrain themselves. There was no glory hunting among her officers: all was for the Empire and the greater good of the Sith Order.

She stood calmly on the bridge of her ship waiting the results of the scans and probes as to what she would be facing.

This is it? Is this all we can muster? The Selonian commander inclined his furry head in an almost resigned bow of surrender. His eyes were clouded in a mix of shame and rage as the council of Corellia witnessed the Sith Fleet emerge near Centrepoint. They had tarried too long, which had now become the rallying call of the Galactic Alliance. Their failure was once again staring them in the face. The council, those twelve odd, scared faces, looked at him with a mixture of fear and resignation. They were waiting for him to speak. He raised his hand above his head and pointed to the long lists of ships and crew that were assembling in the Corellian Atmosphere. There was a delegation from the Rebel Alliance with an Imperial Knight in tow as well.

“Assemble the armies!”

Centrepoint could not be lost. They would push back the Sith at any cost.

Lok's eyes lit up as soon as the Empire exited hyperspace, the confused look of worry and determination swirling in his gaze as he looked across the bow. It wasn't that long ago that he was on Coruscant, the once famous jewel of the Galaxy no more than a melted gem at the hands of the Sith. And in that moment, his thoughts crossed back to his own homeworld, that of Onderon and the oppression it faced and the likelyhood that it too could one day mimic Coruscant. Turning to Captain Greer, his gaze now fired with anger, he issued orders.

"I need Maelstrom and Augustus at Position Felix with the rest of Sentinel at Position Phillip and what's left of Menace at Position Seal." Lok spoke with a stern but calming voice. "And I need them there now."

Captain Greer went about relaying the issues, as Lok stood there in silence. As nervous as he was, he could not show it. He had always been a fighter, meeting his combatants face to face. He was no fleet commander and he knew it. But he could let his men around him know it. This was the assignment given to him by his Empress and the Jedi Grandmaster upon his return to Nar Shadaa, and he would not fail them. With a sigh, he grabbed the comm, ordering a direct line be opened with the lead ship, Herløv.

"This is Lok Skyshatter of the Imperial Knights." He spoke, reaffirming his tone by letting his memories of Onderon fuel his determination. "By order of the Empress Raven Zinthos, you are entering protected airspace. Cease and desist, and you will be allowed safe passage back to wince you came...."

As Lok was speaking into the open comm, the six corvettes began to maneuver and place themselves into position, klaxons aboard each readying each for what could come as ammunitions and ships were prepared in haste. All Lok had to do was give the final order and the Sith Empire would feel the true might of the Zinthos Empire. With an inward sigh, Lok finished.

"Remain on course, and you will be fired upon."

Mordecai stood upon the bridge of the Wyvern, his Victory II command ship, watching the Imperial defenders scramble, like they were an anthill that the boot of the Sith had kicked. The ships under his command were battle-ready, of course. His inexperience would not bring them defeat. The officer at his side, a Captain Maran Jarvus, gave him pointers. After his battle with the Imperial Knights at Borleais, of which the fresh pink scars and slowly regrowing hair here a reminder of, he had swallowed his pride. The man knew his place, but had received Mordecai's express permission to teach him as he saw fit, although he was not to give commands himself unless the Sith was incapacitated.

"They're positioning their corvettes to screen for fighters. Doing the same will protect the Wyvern and the Herløv, and I would recommend doing to until we see what their fleets are capable of."

Mordecai nodded, giving the command with a wave of his hand. There were whispers in the Force here. Curious; Perhaps the Jedi were present, though he doubted he would sense them from this far away with his training. Something else, perhaps? He would ask Quela of it after the battle, but for now he would focus.

They soon received a communique, a warning. He chuckled softly. He maintained radio silence. If Quela would like to start the battle here and now, he would let her. He, instead, waited, as he'd done before, over Coruscant and over Borleais. He was not passive, though he didn't mind being perceived as much. They would hold formation and match the Herløv's speed, awaiting for the opportune moment.

He sent a simple message to his master.

"I am ready. Shall we begin?"

Qaela heard the voice Imperial Knight ordering them to withdraw with a good deal of bemusement. It was almost as though he was unaware of the fact that there was a war going on and that the Sith Empire could be stopped by merely demanding in a stern voice. Even with a probe as small as what she was bringing, it should be clear that the Sith weren't just visiting. She and the ships with her now were but the tip of a very large spear that was about to lance deep into the heart of the Corellian System and claim it for the glory of the Sith Empire and nothing here could stop it. Win or lose this initial skirmish, more ships were coming until the skies above Coronet City were filled with the sight of the glorious Sith fleet.

Considering the enemy before her with a mix of consideration and disdain, she quickly realized that this initial force would need to be dealt with in order to secure her primary objective. Should that fail, she would have to resort to the secondary objective which wasn't quite as appealing, but still doable.

She opened a secured and encrypted comm to Mordecai. "We engage them here, but not to suicide. This is but the first stroke: there is no point in throwing everything at them so early when there is so much more to come."

To their Rebel foes, she said nothing for such pointless comments did not warrant a response.

Mordecai could respect that course of action. An invasion wouldn't end in a day, why use all your resources like it would? The frigate Fury took the lead on his task force's advance, being careful not to be separated from the Herløv. There was a pitched anticipation deep in his gut- A lesser man would succumb to the fear that gnawed with the whispers at the edge of his psyche. Instead, he embraced it. Used it to sharpen his perception, his body's primal reactions to danger serving him, rather than the other way around. He noticed things he'd usually miss. Smells, colors, sounds. The calm breathing of the experienced Captain, the faster breathing of an ensign trying to hide his fear. Mordecai strode forward, placing his hand on the young man's shoulder.

"Embrace your fear. Control it, do not be the one controlled."

He glanced out the observation glass.

"Open fire on Lady Darksong's command."

Near Centerpoint Station

Paying the Rebel threats no heed, the Sith combat fleet continued a controlled advance towards Centerpoint Station while the troop transports and cargo ships remained back away from the upcoming fight. There was a sense of focus and primal anticipation that permeated the ship which delighted Qaela. She loved the way all sentient beings felt when going into combat where they had to kill or be killed. It was primitive, base, and yet, so very natural to all no matter what their background or beliefs. Jedi or Sith, Force sensitive or blind to its call: it didn't matter. All felt it.

Somewhere out there, across the rapidly decreasing distance of cold lifeless space, were thousands of beings feeling the exact same thing. It was a rare point of unity that bonded both sides, just as Nature intended. It didn't matter if one wore the uniform of a Rebel or of the Sith: they were all feeling a variation of anticipation, fear, eagerness, or even a desire to kill. Those feelings saturated the Force if one was open to it and Qaela was definitely open to it. She drank it in and used it to focus herself to the task at hand.

She had always loved and cherished subtlety when it came to personal interactions, politics, and duels, but when it came to fleet tactics she preferred to be excessively blunt and direct. When it came to selecting a ship of her own to command, she immediately went about ensuring the crew was well trained in intensely focused fire against a particular target she wanted dead. The Kyber Class Star Destroyers that the Sith enjoyed producing and fielding excelled at such blunt tactics and for good reason. In her experience, there was little that inspired fear in one's enemy more than an exceedingly large and expertly focused fire that sent streams of highly charged energy straight into a singular target.

With a cruel smile as she look at the tactical holograms on the bridge, she selected the target that she wanted to see disappear first with a casually raised finger, silently dooming the crew of that ship to be the next sacrifices on the alter of the glorious Sith Empire. Captain Geratos nodded and immediately began relaying orders to the gunners and the squadrons of bombers. As soon as they got into range, an intense, blinding tidal wave of turbolaser, blaster, and ion cannon fire would flow over the hapless Rebel ship. The bomber squadrons would dip "below" the field of fire giving the gunners a clear shot before darting into range to fire the first barrage in their payload against the same target further adding to the terrible toll of damage being inflicted. This might be but the first shots of this campaign, but Qaela wanted them to be as memorable as they were brutal.

Both of the sister ships of the Novarch class of Belarus Cruisers ignited their engines in a flash of outgassed hydrogen and energy and churned forward as they broke towards the formation of Sith ships. Both captains and their admiral knew that this would be a decisive engagement, and this was their system. The Corellians were always a brash people, and Godfrey kew this when selecting the first line of ships to engage the Sith attack force. The two captains of the twin ships were focused on this engagement with more thrill and more deadly seriousness than any line captain could be when defending someone else’s section of the galaxy. This was Corellia, and the Sith were damned if they could take it by force like this. They were confident in their victory.

But Godfrey was justifiably concerned.

He had seen the holos from Onderon. From Kuat. From Dark Sun.

Somewhere out in the edges of the hyperlanes to Corellia lay that cursed deadly dagger. He knew that there was a super Star Destroyer out there, there had to be. That was their hammer to the anvil, so where was it? Was it on the Trade Spine, flying up from Onderon? Was it on the Trade Run from the Core?

But no. He couldn’t let that bother him, for now this was the engagement that they needed to plan for. They had fireships enough from the wreckyard if they needed a close engagement with an SSD. Fore now it was a lonely star destroyer and a support group. They would meet it with an equal force, as the evacuation of Centrepoint began. He leaned forward on the observation station and keyed the encrypted link to the Novarch Ackbar and Novarch Sikaot, but before he could give an order they engaged with their full complement of red tinged turbolaser fire. He grinned for what felt like the first time in ages.

And silence was their answer...

Lok shook his head in disgust, the audacity of the Sith knew no bounds. As his ships moved into formation, he knew that if they did not stop the Sith here and now, like Coruscant, and likely Onderon, Corellia stood little chance against their might. That's why he was tasked with this mission by his Empress, and come death or survival, he would see his mission through with the grace and prestige that befell him as one of her Imperial Knights.

Like a spear of Imperial precision, the strike force settled into position, Lok's gaze shifting out the view port as he and Captain Greer looked onward in determination. Lok knew he held no experience here, which is why he conferred with the Captain on the go as the Sith moved into their own, finding confidence in the Elder's knowledge and wisdom. Tension filled the air as the calm before the storm befell all present this day as Corellia's own lively hood stood on the brink of balance and possible doom. And because of this, Lok knew what had to be done.

"Their silence is loud and clear." Lok spoke, his gaze briefly shifting to Captain Greer. "Open comms on all ships."

"This is Lok Skyshatter of her Majesty's Imperial Knights." He spoke into the unit he held, pride and confidence boasting within his tone despite his own reserves upon his own capabilities, making sure to quell any of it spilling out of his voice. "No matter what happens this day, let it be known that we stood as the first wave against the tyrannical Sith might, the strongest they've faced since the fall of the old Alliance. Because through us, Imperial and Alliance alike, we have risen stronger than ever before to stare their darkness in the face and laugh. And when they ask why, reply with this. We are the light that dwells in the darkness, illuminating the hidden truth, that we can never be extinguished."

With that, Lok laid the comm down and gave a subtle nod toward Captain Greer. Like his people before him, the Onderonian that stood here to face the mighty Sith Empire, it was time to release the beasts within and let the Drexls fly with open freedom. "Release the Bombers."

ROUND ONE

Qaela / Mordecai vs Godfrey / Lok

Round One [Q&M]

Task Force Herløv targets Task Force Hammer with (Focus Fire)

- A ship in Task Force Hammer takes 6 damage to their shields

Starfighter action; bombers inbound on Task Force Hammer

- The same ship in the same task force takes 2 damage to their hull

Round One [G&L]

Taskforce Hammer engages Star Destroyer Herløv with its removal action “Focus Fire”

- Herløv takes 8 damage to their shields

(Starfighter Action) Free Fleet Commander "Bombers Inbound" On the Herløv

- Herløv takes 3 damage to their hull

Rebel Alliance Precision Strike Carrier Group - Bombers Inbound on Herløv

- Herløv takes 3 damage to their hull

(Starfighter Action) Fleet Commander - Bombers Inbound on Herløv

* Only 1 Starfighter Action per side; The other task forces do have starfighters, but the starfighter commands represent a side using an overwhelming number of starfighters to push through a certain action. So narratively speaking, you both have starfighters available, it's just on the lead PC to direct their actions as a unit.

(First round up, reminder to both parties. Be as specific as you can with who you attack with, and who you are targeting. Thanks! Enjoy writing out the results!)

With a feral smile of satisfaction on her face, Qaela relished the combat going on around her. Even as her own ship took heavy fire from a massive wave of bombers launched from the enemy, she could sense the deaths and fierce determination of her crew. Enemy turbolasers lit up her shields while bombs blasted apart hull armor killing some of those here, causing their deaths to ripple throughout the Force like tiny grains of sand on a still pond. The feeling of those handfuls of deaths were nothing compared to the steeled determination and fervor of the rest of her crew and it was that delectable nectar she fed upon.

As her bombers returned after their successful bombing run, she realized with some sense of regret that it was time to switch to defense. Only a complete fool would fail to recognize the effectiveness of the enemy's own bombing runs. As powerful as her ship was, it would not last long against the amount of enemy firepower being unleashed against her. With a few intricate dance moves of her fingers over her command console, she ordered her fighters to keep an eye out for returning enemy bombers and destroy anything that approached. As much as she wanted to destroy her enemy, she also didn't want to lose the ship entrusted to her by the Spider. She had to console herself knowing that there was still a massive amount of firepower being unleashed against the enemy cruiser.

Mordecai wasn't one to count his victories before they were earned, but he couldn't help but smile. The battle had taken a poor start, but with one of the cruiser's shields down, the Wyvern could disable it with ease unless they tried to make an escape. He didn't even need the good captain to make the suggestion. He was concerned about the Herløv though- without the flagship of their fleet. He relayed Lady Darksong's orders, commanding his own fighters to assist. Throw in his corvettes and there was very little the enemy carriers could hope to accomplish.

The whispers still gnawed at his mind, though he continued to ignore them. At least for now. A fleet battle was no place to be distracted by such things. The same went for any fears or anxieties he or his crew felt. Victory was withing their grasp- after this battle, Centerpoint would be theirs. He opened a channel to the Herløv.

"Lady Darksong, I await your command. We will continue to fire on your target."

The Selonian Landsknechte, in their dark brown uniforms with blazing white neckclothes, made their formal report in the corner of the command room As Godfrey stood watching the large parabolic map of the battle. In the snippets that he had heard over the damage reports from the Cruiser group, they had evacuated a large majority of the populace of CPS. Still not enough, but many homesteaders wouldn’t leave the fur-faced selonians reported. They would never leave that beautiful station now. Alive or dead. Many would, Godfrey expected, simply die in their homesteads in Hollowtown, their bodies feeding the biosphere they had so long depleted. Such was the fate of those who unsuccessfully fought the Sith Lords. But the object was complete at least and he would save as many lives as he could while they still had time.

His glowering eyes looked up to the displays that showed very clearly that his cruisers were far outside support range and had viciously overextended. He opened a communication to taskforce Hammer and began relaying the orders that he never wished to give. The starfighter commanders received their orders, and with furrowed brows, began their maneuvers. The long lights of their engines streaking out like turbolaser fire.

Darkness and Light.....

Lok looked on as the surrounding darkness of space first illuminated with the light, absorbed it just as quickly, explosions of bombardment quickly fading away to reveal the might of the Sith Empire still standing firm, the encroaching darkness that swelled in the Force fraught with screams of agony of lives lost. He could feel the feast of the Darkside upon the countless souls, hindering his own firm stance and his gaze shifted to Captain Greer, a man of obligation and knowledge gazing back as if the two knew the others thoughts and horrors.

"Have the ships converge on us Captain Greer." Lok spoke as he hung his head, the Elder Captain placing his hand briefly upon the Knight's shoulder before issuing orders across the board. "We have no choice. We cannot feed their desires."

With their main objective complete, Hammer having done their job, Lok knew the moment was at hand. Once Menace and Sentienel were in place, Lok gave the go ahead. Turning aft in unison, engines at full sublight, Bombers returning, their destination become clear. Crossing his hands behind his back, Lok stared out the viewport with Captain Greer at his side. Hesitation in his voice, Lok spoke heavily with doubt. "May the Force help us all."

Qaela was almost saddened to see the enemy fleet already retreating. She had hoped to be able to destroy some of the enemy in their first confrontation, but seeing one of their cruisers take heavy damage as it limped away was at least somewhat enjoyable. Even though she wasn't able to destroy anything, she had ultimately achieved her objective of securing the space around Centerpoint opening it up to the boarding force. The Sith would have their beachhead and would be able to expand their influence in this system until it was entirely under the rule of the Dark Lord.

She ordered repairs to begin on the damage her ship had suffered while making sure the mighty Star Destroyer's guns were able to cover the assault craft as they landed and began securing Hollowtown and the station itself. They anticipated enemy saboteurs so a large number of small hovering drones were dispersed throughout the titanic station to track heat, movement, and sound and relay the information to strike forces that could neutralize the intruders. It would take some time, but soon, there would be nowhere for the enemy to hide.

The number of cargo ships landed on the surface of Centerpoint and began opening up to reveal their contents. Each one had a twin heavy turbolaser cannon that would serve as a sort of "planetary" defense network thus turning the previously unarmed Centerpoint into a weapon platform capable of assisting the Sith should the Rebels attempt to retake the station. Sith Troopers secured the hull around these ships to prevent sabotage from within.

Reinforcements began flowing into the system, too, joining the small Sith initial fleet in preparation for striking against the nearby Twin Worlds.

The handshake was brief with Duke-Captain d'Astarac but the heartfelt gratitude that Godfrey felt was pressed through their gloves. A salute followed it, with all the grace of the Taipani sector could have mustered. Their light blue uniforms, crisp, starched and pressed, stood out against the neutral coloured uniforms of the other commanders. But they carried their pride in their uniforms, and the rows of useless coloured ribbons that stretched across the breast. Godfrey doubted that any had seen any action beyond the border conflicts so common in the Rou-Tapani frontiers. But still here they were, better than most of the old Galactic Alliance worlds. They had brought squadrons of small corvettes, a cruiser and two frigates, all painted in the dark and blue of the Tapani Kingdom. And in that, Godfrey could not have been more proud.

“A pleasure ser.” whispered the large mustachioed duke in his Tapani accent.

And beside him there was also a grizzled veteran of Raven’s Imperial Remnant, with his stealth cruiser and beside him also were two captains of the Cruisers Mandate and Justice both with their wrinkled uniforms of the Rebel Alliance. But as a group they were all tired from a long hyperspace journey.

“Once more into the breach my friends.” He looked at the Imperial Knight and beckoned him to the holotable. “They are strengthening their position at Centrepoint, we must move fast.” He looked at each of them in turn. “Prepare for engagement.”

Rebel Alliance Fleet Command - Godfrey d'Outremer

Even as Sith forces marched down the main streets of Hollowtown and took control of the mayor's office and the control centers, ships began flowing into the newly formed Sith beachhead. The Imperial II Star Destroyer Lightsbane was first to arrive, adding its own firepower to that of the Herløv. That ship was soon joined by two more smaller but still impressive warships, the Neutron Star-Class Bulk Cruiser Shadow's Sleight and the Gladiator II Star Destroyer Gleeful Glutton bringing the armada under Qaela to four. Though she lacked smaller escorting ships, she preferred the sheer strength of the heavy destroyers while her smaller two cruisers would be there to help mitigate and divert any incoming enemy fire.

While the Herløv underwent quick repairs for the moderate damage done to her hull in their previous engagement, Qaela turned her attention elsewhere. For now, while she waited for further Sith reinforcements, she was content to sit back and watch as the Rebel forces arrayed against her grew. This pleased her because it meant that her plan for drawing in enemy ships to be destroyed was working. Plus, the greater the numbers against her, the more glory would be found within the victory. As long as the Rebels hesitated to attack, she was content to wait until the right time presented itself.

For now, she contented her officers and warriors by further securing Centerpoint Station and sending out probes and scouts to investigate the Corellian System. The system had long been a center of trade and manufacturing, so there was plenty of activity even in the war torn Core. Though the Sith held many of Corellia's neighbors there was still plenty of trade to be had. One of the early thoughts she had possessed was to blockade the trade routes with mines and interdictors. She elected against it for psychological reasons: she didn't want to come upon the system too harshly and fan the flames of resistance against the Sith Empire even greater than they might otherwise be. Crushing the trade routes were an option, but one she would use only if other avenues failed. Until then, she would watch, wait, and gain as much information about the system as possible before moving against the planets.

While she was waiting, she kept pushing herself to higher and higher levels. She constantly trained in personal combat, especially with a lightsaber, against the Sith allies she had summoned from Korriban's Academy. Even more so, she delved into some of her own Nightsister teachings and worked on new ways to marry them to Sith practices and usage. It was that latter part that occupied her attention now.

Swathed in her favored black Krath leathers, she entered a moderately sized room that was once an officer's mess that she had taken over and converted to her own needs. There were four figures within the room lit by self contained torches emitting raw firelight. Two wore the black robes and lightsabers showing themselves to be Sith Lords, but their role here was to simply observe and constrain should it be needed. Right now, Qaela's needs and attention were centered on the two individuals sitting in the middle about three meters apart. Both were quite different in almost every way and the duality struck her own personal fancy giving her a small amount of pleasure.

The first individual was a young woman, perhaps barely even two standard decades old. She sat quietly in her chair, looking by all appearances to be slightly nervous as though before a job interview or first date. She fidgeted a little and her head darted from side to side at various minor noises, but she remained in her chair without any further prompting. However, to Qaela's Force enhanced senses, she radiated anxiety and nervousness like a trapped animal readying itself for flight.

The other was an middle aged man, human or near human. Unlike the woman, he was calm and controlled, staring forward at the blank wall across from him, but not in the manner of one in a drug induced haze, but rather of deep contemplation. Also contrasting from the woman was how he appeared through the Force: his outward appearance was bolstered by an internal resolve and determination his companion purely lacked. A casual observer would pick the woman to be the one most likely to bolt from their chair, at least, until they saw the short chains and shackles constraining the man.

With a predatory smile, Qaela evaluated both individuals before setting to work. The woman, though frightened, was here by her own choice, though Qaela would be honest in saying the poor woman's choices were not very desirable from the start. She was from Onderon, one of the most poor and helpless of the Empire. Through a most unfortunate series of events, her parents had been killed leaving her and her four younger siblings with little to support themselves with. Some within the Sith Empire enjoyed preying upon these desperate people because they were willing to do extreme things to survive. For this one, Qaela's aides had picked her from a long list of "applicants" and offered her a choice: give herself and her soul over to the Sith Empire and her siblings would be provided for. The woman wasn't ignorant, she knew what that likely entailed, but she loved her family and with the choice of sacrificing herself or watching the young ones starve to death or slave away in dangerous menial labor was not really a choice.

The man, on the other hand, was a Rebel prisoner, an officer of middling rank who knew what was likely to happen to him, but believed himself able to resist. He had been kept alive for a purpose similar to this as the Sith had a constant need for live victims of various dark and sometimes profane rituals. His own stoicism did him credit, but would not spare him for what was about to come. He had served the Rebel Alliance, then the Galactic Alliance, and now the Rebels once more and had no regrets for his service. He believed that he did what was right and knew that his life would be sacrificed as soon as he was captured.

Obviously, the Rebel officer was not here of his own free will, but that was what was needed for this experiment: Qaela needed a volunteer who had regrets over their life situation, and a prisoner who had no regrets yet was not here of their own accord. Both spirits were different, both were key for her next test. The strength of a spirit was affected by many things ranging from deeply held convictions to even the concept of a free will choice, no matter how reluctant. She wanted to test her new method on a weak volunteer as well as a resolute enemy.

What needed to be done had to be accomplished quickly to be of practical use. Qaela could rive their spirits quite easily, but the key for now was to be able to do it quickly rather than needing the long, drawn out rituals she normally practiced. For months, bit by bit, Qaela and five of her most trusted aides whom she had exclusively cross trained in the Nightsister arts had been working and practicing on taking that Nightsister template and shortening it using Sith methods. It wasn't an easy task and many hapless spirits had been needed before they had come to this point where a practical demonstration was possible.

With a nod to herself, Qaela began. Delving quickly into the old Nightsister spells she learned as a child and perfected as an adult, Qaela began by opening a small tear into the spirit world. She tempered the rough, almost primal primitive nature of these spells with the refined, almost smooth flowing practices of the Sith's way of using the Force and, within moments, reached out to the two hapless victims before her and slipped an invisible knife deep into their very being. That knife cut and tore, but not at the flesh. This knife was there to cut away the spirit from the body, drawing it further into the spirit world with each slice until the natural attraction of the spirit world was stronger than the body's pull to retain it.

Qaela ignored the horrific, blood curdling sounds coming from her victims, instead focusing on riving their spirits apart until they were completely free after which the sounds abruptly stopped. The spirits, now free of their corporeal bodies, were quickly absorbed into the spirit world where they vanished among the countless others that already inhabited that void.

Only thirteen seconds had passed from the moment she started until the point the bodies stopped moving. It was longer than she had hoped, but still much quicker than her previous attempts. She noted, wryly, that the young woman had actually made it out of her chair and was now sprawled lifelessly a meter from the door. Qaela briefly wondered if the girl knew the door was locked, or if she had actually harbored some hope of escape, but those musings faded in less than a second.

"Clean up the mess," she ordered. "We will evaluate and resume at a later point."

With that, she stalked out of the room to return to the bridge and see if any new information had been uncovered in her absence.

Out of the star-field surrounding Centerpointe, the bulky and ungainly Bulwark Mark II Black Bracer dropped out of hyperspace. Despite being freshly painted its namesake color with its name carefully emblazoned in gold on its prow, its layers of armor were pocked and scarred with the old marks of blaster fire. A few seconds later it was followed by the twin Captor-class Cruisers Moon Beetle and The Broken Bullet, which immediately dropped behind the Black Bracer and took position behind its bulk. Away from the newly arrived ships, a single Hapan Nova-class Battlecruiser, Our Velvet Ire, dropped out of hyperspace and began circling the beachhead.

On the bridge of the Black Bracer, which looked like something between a military command center and a chapel, Commander Jaden Jorus stood over a holo-display and squinted at the read-out with his good eye. The results of the last fight played out before him in names and numbers.

“...Yeah, they’ll be back.” He activated communications. “This is Commander Jorus, of the Fleet of the Strands, 1st Flotilla, here as reinforcements. Sending security codes now. Just let us know where you want us to park this tub.”

As he waited for the confirmation that would let his ships approach the fleet, he grimaced and rubbed at his cybernetic arm. The boss had hired him out before, but this was different. The boss’ merc jobs usually had him commanding the tiny fleets of small-time warlords getting into territory skirmishes, or pirate-hunting for local governors. Every once in a while he got into something big, like a cartel war, but nothing like now. This was the kriffing Sith Empire. What the heck was the boss thinking? Small jobs were his style, not this imperial conquest nonsense. Sure the pay was good but was it worth the attention of a bunch of maniacs like the Sith?

Then again, the last time Jaden had seen the boss, he’d been different. First and foremost, the wily, overdressed schemer had had his eyes gouged out, so that had been a bit distracting. Second, the boss had seemed distracted himself, barely paying attention to Jaden’s reports. Third, a lot of the missions he’d been sending Jaden on since then had been strange. The old merc didn’t know much about the historical knick-knacks the boss would sometimes have him pick up, but it seemed he’d been doing it a lot more recently. Sometimes he’d even been pulled out of a job before it was done to go snatch some ancient tablet or cup or book from some hole in the ground or a collector’s stash.

Three more years. Just make it three more years, then there’s that nice resort on Naboo where I can wither away in peace.

He keyed communications again. “Captain Zymo, broadcast the lead ship your stealth frequencies. No sense giving anyone a reason to shoot you before this place gets noisy.”

With reinforcements having arrived and repairs to her own Herløv complete, Qaela was ready for the Sith to move to their next target: the Twin Worlds. The two worlds orbited each other almost like equal moons while also orbiting Corell. Centerpoint, their stronghold, was firmly between the two planets thus making the two worlds the next logical move simply due to proximity. While their first skirmish was just that, a skirmish, this time she would be attacking with a much larger force designed to do significant damage if needed.

With barely over three million inhabitants, Talus didn't have a large population, especially compared to Corellia itself, but Qaela was determined to take it as part of the Sith's overall objective of taking this system. Her goal was to occupy one of the two worlds then swiftly take the other all in one fell swoop. The ship manufacturing on these two planets wasn't huge, but it was still worthy of occupying.

Leaving Mordecai and his task force to protect Centerpoint, she and the substantial reinforcements that had recently arrived began its steady sublight advance towards Talus. Assault shuttles and massive landing craft followed, waiting for their opportunity to land and claim the planet in the name of their glorious Emperor.

Qaela stood on the bridge of the Herløv, watching and waiting to see what the enemy response would be.

"Connected sir."

"1st Flotilla, we're beginning our advance on Talus. We're going to follow Herløv's heading and match their speed. Moon BeetleBroken Bullet, maintain formation behind us. Captain Zymo, go dark and await orders."

Alright, let's see how badly they want this rock.

Lok stepped to the holotable with a hint of subtle experience, their last encounter with the Sith leaving a sour taste within his mouth as much as whiskey did during his leave. But this time, with the added aid, Lok was filled with a newfound glimmer of hope, his aim as true as his oath to his beloved Empress. With a nod toward Godfrey, he opened his comm to Captain Greer.

"Bring us out of hyperspace."

The lines that once blurred shifted to a sudden standstill as the stars lit up the darkened backdrop. At his command was an Armada, one he felt unworthy to command and yet would do so with the confidence that its men beckoned for. Emanating it in his stance and forward gaze, he gazed upon the enemy before him and smirked.

Qaela's eyes lit up in anticipation when the enemy dropping out of hyperspace before the Sith forces. This would be a glorious battle sending many to their deaths. As both sides began squaring up for battle, a high priority message flashed across her command console. Normally, she would ignore incoming messages at the start of battle, but this was of such urgent priority that she read it, fearing it was the Emperor himself.

To her dismay, it was not the Spider, but rather the panicked governor of Kuat indicating a sizable Rebel incursion into the shipyards of that planet begging for help from any nearby Sith forces. With much of the Sith fleet dedicated to expanding the Empire, the defenses at Kuat itself had been slightly lower than normal with the thoughts that the Rebels would never dare be so audacious as to strike such a fortified location. Even some of her own fleet here had been taken from Kuat, so she was quite angered at this report.

For a few moments, she debated what to do: it was frustrating to see the enemy present and battle ready to commence, but she knew that she must do what was best for the Empire. As much as she wanted to draw blood and conquer Corellia, it was far more important to the Empire to protect Kuat. Since they were relatively close, it was critical that they answer the call for help. With gritted teeth, she called out new orders to the fleet.

"Kuat is under attack by the Rebels, we must answer the call for help and protect our hard won shipyards. Corellia will have to wait, it will have its day, but we must withdraw and go to Kuat to deal with the Rebels there."

Even if it meant losing the beachhead on Centerpoint, they needed to withdraw and with every ship available. With a fleet like what was now facing them, they couldn't risk leaving a portion of their forces behind. Giving the order and coordinates to Commander Jorus, her ships immediately began pulling back, recalling their fighters and bombers, and preparing for the jump to Kuat.

She looked back at the enemy forces arrayed against them with a small shake of her head in sorrow. The Rebels might think they won a victory here, but she knew what the ultimate result of this disruption of her plan would be. The Empire could not lose face to this attack and would return to take Corellia. Instead of the methodical, tactical, step by step approach she had planned, they would come in overwhelming numbers without any thought to holding back the destruction they would unleash. Corellia would be devastated and left in ruin as a symbol to those who would resist the Empire's might. Many more would die than would otherwise had and while Qaela didn't care about loss of life, she did care about wasting good resources and upsetting the Balance.

Her fleet would jump momentarily and soon, they would face battle over Kuat.

“They actually went after Kuat..."

"Sir?"

Jorus shook himself.

"All ships, plot a course for Kuat. Jump in battle formation, and expect immediate contact upon reentry."

The bridge dissolved into a flurry of activity as officers relayed orders and crewman scrambled to get the ship ready for the new fight. Jorus grimaced as he saw the hyperspace solution resolve on the holo-display.

We're going in first. Marvelous.

"Prepare to jump....Commence jump!"

  • 1 month later...

With a press to the pedal at her left foot, the new model T-65XJ3 “X-wing” yawed in a gentle arc to the port side of the bulky Novarch Ackbar. Pulling her away from the forward placed cruisers in the last picket line. In a few short minutes, all that would be ahead of her and the eleven other members of Templar squadron would be the opposing picket line of Sith Star Destroyers. It could be considered a skirmish, but what it really was, was a show of pride.

Pride that stretched back the generations to when long ago, champions would skirmish in solitary duels before their awaiting armies. To seize glory before a great conflict, to establish themselves a cloak of honour that they could wear to their dying day. But today its was to boost the fledgling morale of the scattered rebel forces defending the once great system of Corellia. Those forces who were now watching viewscreens that showed the departing ion trails of a few good men and women. There was tactical value as well of course, their sensors would be recording every millisecond the X-wings were close to the Sith pickets. And perhaps, however unlikely, the techs going over gun cameras and sensor recordings, could find a weakness that would bring an early victory.

But that wasn’t likely. What was likely, was that these twelve grey and red painted X-Wings would loose a great many pilots, for little or no return. For like a horde of rabble, the Sith always came back for more.

Beth Andromina eased back on her pedals and eased the curve into a line that pointed towards the distant cruisers and star destroyers. Whose black shapes blotted out thousands of stars.

She gulped down a drink from her canteen and checked her EV seals on her orange jumpsuit with a quick pat of her gloved hands. She glanced to the side and saw her wingmate looking back. The twi’lek gave a friendly wave that brought a wry smile to Beth’s face. Kaila was a joy to have as a wingmate. Even beyond the initial butting of heads that had occurred from a non human being placed into a traditionally Imperial unit. She was a kind, sarcastic, and even beautiful woman. Beth shook her head and let the smile grow to its full, returning a friendly wave then a mock salute. It was almost time.

She triggered the comm unit to her squadron frequency, clicking the comms open with another touch of her thumb.

“Remember lads, quick splashes, no hero shit. We are not to go beyond the pickets, and if we have no takers in no man’s land, turn back and give them a taunt.”

The Sith of course would respond in kind. A single flight of their damned TIEs. For some strange reason, neither side dishonoured the other in these duels. For though there might be hatred between religions, sides, and armies, there was a mutual respect between pilots. The were the knights of space, and like some old knight in armour, they kept their code of honour.

“Sign on lads.”

The fighter pairs sounded off in a quick cacophony of voices, for each fighter had its wingmate, and each one would fight and die for the other. For they were a family. She gritted her teeth as she listened to Kailia, or Templar Two, sign off as well. Hoping and praying that they would all be home for dinner, then flicked the frequency to guard, which would be broadcast to whatever flight of Sith pilots awaited her small crew of X-Wings.

“Tally ho!”

Andromina

Corellia.

Bakra had been here before, years ago. It had been one of his first assignments as a mercenary. Back then, he'd flown an aging V-Wing. It had been a simple piracy deterrence mission, and they'd only seen a little action from pirates who had quickly thought better of attacking them. He'd taken the rest oft he time in-system to explore the planet, but had been sorely disappointed. Compared to his homeworld of Nar Shaddaa, it had seemed so bleak, so boring. He hadn't missed it when they finally got a new contract near Naboo.

Now he was back, serving in the Sith war machine. He'd heard the stories, but they didn't bother him. He had yet to be asked to do anything unsavory, and they paid him well, so he was loyal, and he performed to the best of his abilities. Which brought him to his current situation- Taking his squadron of hyper-aggressive pilots against one of the rebel's own squadrons. His orders were simple- keep them away from the fleet. With battles springing up on Kuat and Mon Cal, the Sith weren't looking for a fight right now. He and his squadron were to stop the rebel probes and make sure they didn't find it worth the risk to attack head-on.

But here, away from the fleets and the mayhem of combat, they could control the situation. People would die for sure. he didn't doubt that. But he'd given very strict commands that if a pilot ejected, they weren't going to commit any war crimes by shooting them. The Sith wanted to commit war crimes? Fine. They could do it themselves. But he wasn't prepared to make that mark on his soul. Not for a fatter pay check, at least.

"Once you take a fighter down, move to the next. Don't waste your time shooting the pilots. We want to be home in time for lunch."

The comms lit up, each pilot responding in turn, and claiming their targets. Nobody touched the opposing leader, or her wingmate, leaving them for Bakra and his own second, Joss Ghillar, a pilot from the Sith coreworlds and damn good at his job.

Upon the rebels' transmission, however, he cracked a smile, responding with his own.

"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more."

The shrill whistle-pop of the astromech spitting out a long sentence of what was likely very unnecessary info grated on Beth’s eardrums. She glanced at the tactical readout that the little astromech’s translations were scrolling across. She narrowed her eyes as she read the translation and sighed.

<< Odds are stacked against us. TIE Defenders. >>

“I am well aware of that Dimitri.” Here she used the droids full nickname as she always did when feeling exasperated at the green painted astromech. “But the XJ was made in response to the development of the new model TIEs. At best it’ll be a tie.” She gave a wry chuckle at her own pun that was totally lost on the stoic droid. But the droid was right in its own way, matched one on one, TIE defenders were a massacre to fight in a head on strafe. So the Templars would do the opposite. Maneuverability was the X-Wings key advantage.

She keyed her comms to her intersquadron frequency.

“Fire at maximum then break into pairs.”

She flipped up the protection cover of the torpedo trigger and with a nudge of her thumb activated the firing control that played itself over the HUD of her flight helmet. Crossing lines and interception vectors.

“D.” She whispered. Using the shorthand for her Astromech. “Prepare tubes for launch, full burst, target leading pair.”

She placed the crosshairs over the distant dot that was the signature of the leading TIE defender. The Astromech behind her ejection seat began to echo the sound of her targeting system, first a beep every second, then as the computer achieved lock and transmitted the lock down to the waiting torpedoes, a long whine. She took a deep breath and then pressed her thumb down on the trigger for the launchers.

Two brilliant streaks of light broke away from her starfighter and streaked towards the pair of fighters a dozen kilometers away. Then she jammed the control yoke to right, mimicking the movement with her feet, flipping the X-wing to her port side and into a shallow dive. Which her wingmate copied. All along the X-wing squadron, the same was repeated until a blistering array of torpedoes shot towards the rapidly closing TIE defenders.

It could not be said if the pair of streaking missiles blotted the life from either of the two enemy pilots. What was sure, was that both TIE defenders turned into a mass of spinning detached wings, fire, and burning fuel. Beth said a silent prayer as the rest of the squadron reported their individual kills. The Sith had gotten very unlucky, and Beth felt a sorrow edging her voice.

“Splash two.”

Dimitri tweedled a response that sounded like a mournful wail.

“Spast them.”

She didn’t swear at the unlucky pilots, she swore at the Sith command that had sent a squadron to their deaths. The pilots she knew, if they survived, would have marked it as misfortune and would someday lift mugs of ale to each other. She banked the fighter towards the distant burning wreckage and her squadron followed. It was time for the final secondary mission of the flight either way. Comms were respectfully silent as she ordered Dimitri to begin sensor sweeps for lifesigns.

They found 5 out of twelve EV pilots from the Sith forces and after marking their locations with flares, as well as dropping off EV support from their cargo bays, they transmitted the coordinates to Sith High command, and banked back to the Rebel Fleet. Another small victory in a galaxy wide conflict.

The ragtag Corellian command who currently occupied Gateway station over the central world of Corellia, looked more and more like a inter-galaxy  arms convention. Especially with the arrival of the newest reinforcements from the Rebel Command at Nar Shaddaa. Or more righly, in Godfrey’s opinion, the Imperial Remnant command at Corellia. But in the months long conflict he had developed a begrudging respect, if not a total admiration for the Imperials. Their Knights, such as Lok Skyshatter, or their vaunted fighter pilots had made quite the impression. They at least had some experience fighting the Sith Lords in their own methods of conflict. The GA pilots and officers were learning more every day, and even the proud commanders of the Taipani were now grizzled veterans from the skirmishes. Their faded blue uniforms now threadbare from overuse, and the gold braid even looked tarnished on their shoulders.

He could not have been more proud.

He himself had come a long way from the bitter senator of just a few years before. He had found his purpose, for maybe the first time in his life. The only regret he could feel was that he knew it would last for only a few brilliant months before it would all be snuffed out. But still, he could not keep the smile off his face as he strode up to the holo display.

“Soldiers of our Alliance.”

He looked up into the eyes of Prince Amaury of the Taipani and gave him a solemn nod. The prince’s young face hardened into a grim smile. He was a warrior at heart, and like most of the Taipani, had come under his own desires. Glory could only be found in battle after all.

“It is time we hurl these mongrels into the void.”

He gestured to the holoreport on the Sith fleet.

“You have your orders. May the force be with you.”

Rebel Alliance Fleet Command - Godfrey d'Outremer

Hyperspace unfolded from its illuminated brilliance into a tapestry of deep black, interspersed with twinkling starlight and at its center, a jewel of the Core Worlds, the planet of Corellia, orbited by its moons. The planet was aglow with citylight, a contrast to the background of space. Close in orbit was Centerpoint station, the goal of the Imperial Knight Expeditionary Force, and the sight of countless battles. It was a vast battlefield when viewed through the cockpit window of Kyrie's TIE-Ugy, and she was glad that she would not be in direct fleet command, the job taken up by Al-Afdal Dyrrhachium in her stead.

Dialing in her comlink, the Imperial Knight caught the beginning of Dyrrhachium’s broadcast on all-comms. She checked the battlemaps, watching as the fleet set into parallel with those starships belonging to Godfrey d'Outremer. Dyrrhachium’s gravelly voice cut into the silence of her ship like a vibroknife,

“...Forces of the former Empire. Former Pirates. Rebels.”

His voice almost snarled the last word, he was no great supporter of some of those in Rebel Alliance Command, and he enjoyed working without their authority. Kyrie and her Watchers set into an escorting formation, opening their scanners for enemy fighters. For now they would be on interception duty, until a Sith Lord revealed himself in the Force. Then they would destroy them with extreme prejudice.

“We are here to free Corellia from the Sith. It fell without our support in great slaughter. On whom, therefore is the labor of avenging these wrongs and recovery fallen, if not upon us?

The Fleet commander let the words hang in the static. Kyrie wished she had the strength of tongue enough to speak like the older man, but it was not her fate. He continued gravely but with passion,

"We have been conferred remarkable glory in arms and courage, let us fall upon the Sith with the intent of destruction. We shall hound them until their miserable end!”

As one, the all-comms alit with responses. Even the Lend-Lease forces responded resoundingly with the calls of the captains as one voice;

“The Force Wills It!”
