Felucia - Jedi Temple

A brief moment of silence lingered upon the air after her exclamation, the smile upon his face hidden by the elongated fingers that stroked at his chin, his green gaze still falling upon her form as he slightly teased at her before he finally revealed the hidden smile. A slight chuckle could be heard snorting forth that resembled a Gamorrean grunt as he turned, placing a palm upon her shoulder to turn her with him.

"I see child." He spoke, this time a more serious tone echoing within his gentle voice as he began walking away from the Temple's Entrance toward an inner courtyard where a handful of Initiates and Padawans were, some studying, some meditating, a couple sparing. "Tell me why you wish to become a Jedi young one. Why be so willing to give up such a long life ahead of you for a life of servitude and sacrifice?"

Motioning for her to sit, his hand reveales a small pond with various fish swimming within, a duracrete barrier running its course around it, as he took a seat and motioned his hand across it's still surface, small ripples following its wake. "We Jedi are like these fish, confined to our duties, making sure the murky waters of darkness does not overcome our beloved Galaxy, and like the ripples my hand have caused to the water..." Just as he speaks, the fish within rush toward his hand, nipping at the path his hand made. "The Force is our only way of knowing when our Galaxy have been invaded."

This was scary, the boldest thing she had ever done. She searched his face trying to find out what he might be thinking. Part of the problem was Tre’ was covering his face. Once he had moved his hand she could see that the Kaminoan had a smile on his face and he was chuckling. Solestran didn’t really know what it had meant.

As she followed Tre’ she watched in awe as she say the young apprentices sparring, the way that they were moving so gracefully and were so concise with their movements. Some of them who were meditating which seemed like it would be very difficult to do for long periods of time.

She was taking in the beauty of the courtyard as she was then asked why she had wanted to be a Jedi. It was a fair question, but she was not entirely sure how to explain. She sat down next to him, and thought about her answer as he began telling her about how the fish were confined to the pond, it was true that the Jedi were expected to behave a certain way, and dedicate their lives to serving others in the galaxy. She watched in amazement as the fish were all swimming towards his hand. She had hoped to learn to become one with the force. “I know I am force sensitive, my father told me so. I feel like I have a responsibility to use it for good.” She paused for a moment as she watched one of the apprentices misstep and was stunned by a training saber. “I believe in justice and freedom, and I must admit I do have a passion for bringing an end to the darkness that the Sith create. I want to serve others and I want to serve myself by being the best Jedi I can be.” She looked down for a moment, and then back up at Tre’ as she watched his face again to see if he would give away what he was thinking.

Tre' observed her as she spoke, her spirit filled with the brash innocence of youth. He smiled, as one similar to herself had wandered these very halls not long ago himself. "I see. So your father was Jedi?" He questioned her knowledge of her own sensitivity to the Force as his green eyes glared into her own, mindful of the similarities she held to this other pupil he thought of.

Before she had a chance to respond however, his hand motioned one of the Initiates over to him, turning back toward her. "This is Dreg." His hand offering introductions to the Cathar. "Dreg, show her to her quarters, and both of you meet me here in the morning after a good night's rest." He chuckled. "We'll have a long day ahead of ourselves."

With that, Tre' stood, bowing as he excused himself, and walked away, disappearing around a corner a few yards away. As he left, Dreg offered his large furred hand to introduce himself. "Don't mind Master Tre so much. His mind acts differently than ours, some would say faster in truth. But he's a kind and gentle soul like most of the Masters here, if not more so." Dreg motioned for Solestran to follow, first showing her the escalators that flowed down into the mess hall, then where the showers were all well as where she could acquire standard robes should she wish, and finally to where they would meet up in the morning before heading to meet Master Tre'.

"Well this is where we will meet up in the morning. Your room is down that hall behind you, FD-4478." He said pointing across from him. "Mine is this way, MD-3568, if you need anything through the night." He said, this time pointing to his left straight ahead. "You should find everything you need in your room. Any questions before I head to bed?"

It made Solestran feel uneasy whenever she discussed her father, but understood that it was relevant. She was also afraid talking about him might get her automatically rejected by the Jedi. “Not exactly,” she started, “my father is a Sith, he wanted to be a Jedi, but was overtaken by the dark side. He had started to study the ways of the Jedi, and could sense that I had his sensitivity to the force, but he started changing. He wanted power, wealth, and his greed was over taking him. “ She started to feel overwhelmed and had to take a breath. “So, my mom ran away with me, I was so young I barely remember. I think he might still be looking for me.” She confided to him in almost a whisper. She hoped that it would be understood that she had no intention of being like him.

She nodded at Dregg as they were introduced. Relieved to think of something else for a minute. Though it was a little concerning when Tre’ had chuckled and said that they had a long day ahead of them, she couldn’t help but be a bit nervous. As Dregg spoke she followed where he had motioned for her to follow. “He seems very nice,” she said, thinking about some of the more impatient beings she had met in her travels here.

Solestran was quite grateful to be shown to the mess hall and where she could freshen up. She had grown quite the appetite, and was very tired from her travels. Before Dregg left her on her own he asked her if she had any questions, and it felt as though she had so many, but figured they would be answered in time. “I’m okay for now, thank you Dregg, I appreciate it.”

"You're welcome." Dreg spoke with a smile, or his attempt at one, as beings like Cathars and Shistavanen lacked the muscle movements humanoids held to truly mimic such expressions fully. Still, his golden eyes revealed his intent with openness. "I'll see you in the morning then."

And with that, Dreg departed, leaving the girl to her own devices. She could access most of the areas around her, as Dreg instructed. But outside of the quarters of the Temple, she would need the presence of a full fledged Jedi to truly explore. Thankfully, Tre' was taking care of that at the very moment, sending a comm message out to a specific Jedi Knight he had in mind for the young girl. It would be awhile before this Knight would receive the comm, possibly longer should something befall Mjan. But Master Tre' had a knack for pairing newly Knighted Jedi with purposeful Padawans, and he felt this would be the most promising of his works. With that, he settled in for the night with meditations and a restful night's sleep.

When morning came, Dreg was awaiting Solestran where he had left her the evening before. Once she arrived, he would guide her to where Master Tre' had instructed them to meet him, leading them past the courtyard where Tre had brought the young girl yesterday evening through another courtyard, past a meditation chamber, and into a training room. When they arrived, Master Tre' would be kneeling within the center of the room deep into his morning meditations. Yet, despite his depth of meditation, one of his eyes opened and his gaze fell upon the two as they entered. Returning to his stature, he spoke.

"Tell me what you two know of the Light and Dark sides of the Force." Tre spoke, with Dreg offering up his own explaination of the two standing for good and evil amongst Force Users, but most importantly, he paid attention to what Solestran thought about the two.

Once Solestran was alone it wasn’t too hard for her to find her room and although she was a little apprehensive about what the next day might bring she managed to fall asleep pretty quickly. Of course it meant that morning came pretty quickly too. She had quickly washed her face and had put on some new clothes. She wanted to look her best and make the right impressions.

She quickly made her way to where she had been instructed to meet Dregg. She hoped he couldn’t tell that she was a bit afraid of what she would be asked next. She followed him around the beautiful building, and into a sort of training room where Tre’ had been kneeling. He looked as though he was meditating like the Jedi Knights had seemed to do. His eyes opened as they were walking into the room. She couldn’t help but feel slightly intimidated.

She thought about the question as she listened to Dregg answer and she agreed it was about good and evil or so it had seemed. “Well, it’s how you use it.” She started thinking about how her father had wanted to use it for power. “It can be used to help others, like how the Jedi help people. Or it can be used for selfish gain, or even...to hurt others.” She stopped, hoping it was close to what he had been looking for.

Tre' smiled toward the two as he stood up, his green gaze shifting toward the window overlooking Felucia's jungles as he stared out toward them and interlocked his hands behind him. "Yes. That is partial true. It does depend on how you use it, but it also depends on your nature."

"The Force is like this planet, and in truth, all of nature. It is both light and dark, but neither at the same time. It simply exists, a energy that intertwines with nature as a whole." Tre turns back to the two, his mind lost upon his words as he tries to gather the right paraphrase to explain what he means. "In nature, it is balanced, neither light nor dark, a neutral element. But in the hearts of both sentients and creatures, it's characteristics are defined as light or dark, depending on their nature."

Motioning his hand for both to sit, Tre glides past the past gracefully and kneels behind them. He reaches out his long and slender hands toward their shoulders and speaks. "Close your eyes and breath slowly and deeply. Calm yourselves and listen for the flow that surrounds us. For some, it sounds of music, others, it sounds of a stream, and even rarer, it sounds like a bustling city. But listen for its call and tell me what you hear."

Dreg sat there mostly in silence, doing as Master Tre instructed. He took deep breaths in and exhaled them slowly, matching the rhythm of his heart nearly to the rise and fall of his chest, his ears twitching to every single sound that was made. But the Force did not call to him. He sighed deeply as he opened his eyes and looked backwards to Master Tre before turning to Solestran and checking her progress, Master Tre's gaze looking upon Dreg with compassion. He had tried this exercise at least three times that he knew of and still had not heard or felt its call. His gaze shifted to Solestran as well, wondering how she would fair.

The Jedi Temple on Felucia was the most publicly visible Jedi installations in the Galaxy. Despite the constant threats from the Sith, the Jedi refused to completely hide their presence, hoping to attract as many newcomers and recruits as possible. While there was definitely a Jedi affiliated military presence here, most of the defense strategy revolved around its planetary shields and ion cannons rather than brute strength. Even with the knowledge that a Sith fleet could appear above the vibrant colors of the fungal forests that made up most of the planet, recruits and possibly Force sensitive Aspirants continued to flood into the facility.

Knight Zhoto Zaan was one of the many Jedi who was tasked with greeting, evaluating, and sorting these new Aspirants. It was his job to detect threats from infiltrators as well as determine if those coming to the gates to join were actually Force sensitive and could become a Jedi, or if they would better serve the Order among its varied and assorted military, medical, and support divisions. It was a position that he found fulfillment and joy in because he was able to meet so many people with dreams and hopes rather than being on the front lines of the conflict with the Sith.

He noticed a young man enter the Temple Courtyard and approached him. "Greetings," he said, "what brings you to the Jedi?"

Tai mundo was looking around in the jedi temple. He didn't know were to look first. He was so distracted that he sensed something approaching him before he saw that it was a middle aged man. 'ow hello' said tai a little bit too fast. he was verry excited but wanted to sound confident. 'I am tai mundo. i grew up on naboo. I was told to come here because i was force sensitive.'

Tai knew that this question would come.

On his way to Felucia he had long thought about a fitting answer. He knew that the answer would be important. until now everything  he had thought to say sounded clumsy and childish. But when the man before him asked the question the words came out of tai's mouth without doubt ' well for a start i had always quicker reflexes than my brother and friends back on naboo. never thought that spechial. But one day i went with my father to his work at the theed palace space vessel engineering coorporation.

He is a engineer there.

And when one of the Droids had a glitch end something fell down. My dad would have been crushed if i didn't sensed it comming and pulled him away

I did remember the stories about the jedi and their abilities.

Then weeks later a jedi came to town and i ask asked him about him. He said he sensed the force in me. so recomended me to come here

Zaan had heard of many stories. There were some among the Order who felt called to scour the Galaxy, following where the Force took them to find others who had the spark needed to use the Force. They didn't feel the drive to teach or train those they found, but instead guided them to the Jedi. He had not been called in such a manner, but he respected those who did.

"I am glad you were able to save your father," he responded. He couldn't sense any sort of deception coming from the newcomer, nor any sign that he was an infiltrator wanting to harm the Jedi, but that didn't mean he was able to be a Jedi. Still, he would continue with procedure and introduce him into the Jedi life. He gestured with his hands to follow deeper within the Temple grounds. "You have taken the first step in your journey by coming here. Come, let us take the second by getting you registered in the Jedi Temple."

He took Tai through the public areas of the Temple, showing the cafeteria, the public version of the Library, and the general training rooms. He also got Tai assigned to some temporary quarters and showed him where he could stay.

"There are many tests that a young aspirant must undergo to see how much they can fully touch the Force," Zaan said. "Please, tell me what is it that brought you to the Jedi? What made you choose us over the Sith?"

On his way to the jedi temple tai had every possible question they could be asked runned through hishead. this question however he wasn't prepeared for. He thaught it obvious. 'back on naboo i heard many stories about the jedi and the sith. of course i know those stories can't all be true. but my mother told me when i was little. In every story there is a core that is true. You only need to dig through the lies and the made up stuff to find the core. Well when i dig trough the lies i came to know that the jedi their first concern is to help people and bring peace. That's something i want to fight for.

"This is true," said Zaan. "The Jedi seek to help others and bring peace, but that is not all the Jedi do. More important than anything is harmony with the Force. We serve the light side of the Force, the Living Force, and not the other way around. The Sith seek to bend the Force itself to their will and use it for selfish reasons, the Jedi listen to the Force itself and follows where it leads.

"There are many paths within the Jedi Order. Some, such as myself, seek to help those who have just discovered the Force. Others teach and train those Padawans so they may become Jedi Knights. There are some who wish to study and meditate upon the Force and seek new answers, or who wish to live among a select population and offer guidance as best as they can. Some among the Jedi believe that violence is never the answer, but seek peace both within themselves and in others. There are a few, including our new Grandmaster, who believe that the Sith must be fought directly and in turn become soldiers rather than simple monks. No single path is right for everyone, and the Jedi would not force any to follow a path they do not feel called to.

"I am but the start of your journey, the guide who will help you learn about options available to you. For a time, you will study among others who are like you and new to the Temple. You will learn about the basics of the Force, how to reach out and touch it, and the philosophy that binds all Jedi together. Do well and show the needed aptitude and you will eventually catch the eye of a Knight or Master who will take you on as a Padawan and further complete your training. Should you not show the needed skills in the Force, and there is no shame in it, there are always places here among the Order for you to help and contribute your skills to the greater good.

"Do you have any questions for me?"

Zaan smiled at the zeal of the newcomer knowing that there was so much more for him to discover. "Come, then, let us get you settled and I will introduce you into the classes with the others."

For the next several hours, the two of them went throughout the Temple on various tasks. First was to properly record his entrance into the Jedi Temple as an Aspirant, then to get quarters and training garments assigned to Tai. Though it was not intentionally obvious, while this process was undergoing, biometric scans were taken of the young man and run through every affiliated recognition system the Jedi had access to in order to filter out possible Sith infiltrators and to build an actual profile on the newcomer. It was a shame that such actions had to be taken, but there were always those who wished ill in the Galaxy.

As soon as Tai was able to be settled into his quarters and get some food, Knight Zaan met him to escort him to the first of his training classes. This particular class was designed for those Aspirants who were fresh to the Temple. The longest any had been here was only a few weeks. The ages of the students ranged from young children all the way to older adults: the Jedi did not care about age so much as connection and knowledge of the Force. All were new to the Jedi way and were on the same level.

Knight Tealg, a kindly older human woman, entered the room and began the class. For the next several weeks, Tai would attend this and other classes that gave him a range of knowledge from the history of the Jedi to the basic concepts of the Force. He was taught and allowed to reach out to feel the Force, but for now, until he learned to control himself, he was discouraged from using the Force to do anything further. In time, he would be able to develop his skills further, but he needed to learn the basics more. He was also given an opportunity to ask questions and focus his studies a little more on what interested him.

Construction begins on a new flagship for the Jedi forces: a newly designed and updated MC95B that had been ordered. Surviving crew from the Adi-Wan would be joined by new recruits, both veterans of local planetary naval forces and those who were fresh out of various academies around the Galaxy.

Damnation!

Or at least that is what they say about our sorry planet. Some say it is the wrath of God, or perhaps the force itself, but the fact still remains. Death has become Felucia.

It walks like an old woman through the streets, knocking on some doors, passing others by. In those houses in which she visits the children pass first. Great boils along their lymph nodes, then like a cancer, it spreads through their bodies. Ending in the lungs where it brings a frothy red sputum. It effects immigrant and Felucian the like. Humans die faster than us, but perhaps it is a blessing.

May the force protect us.

The worn Naboo craft, The Royalest Royalty Racer, as it had now been dubbed and transponder codes tweaked to display, hummed through space, the usual chatter onboard replaced by a solemness that bordered on the unnatural. With only one Squib aboard, the ordinary background chatter  was absent. The remaining Squib was focused on his task at hand. The sooner he deposited these Jedi, the faster he could get back to his brethren.

The Mantis had taken it upon himself to ensure his gear, weapons, and armor were polished to a sheen and in top form. Interspersed with this preparedness he engaged in numerous ritual meditative exercises;  most of which focused on a smooth flow of combat oriented movements with a variety of weapons. He trained with them live. A whirling dervish of a man, he was covered in sweat as his simple training tunic clung to his Corellian body.

Leena had ensured that Oprheon was alright. She offered him encouragement and discussed his communing with the force, helping him understand how to easier reach out and access it more as a second nature. It was a talent that took developing and here amongst the darkness of space was as good a place as any; his newfound pet an excellent source of sensing and targeting for nonviolent humane force applications.  She left him with lessons to study and meditations to practice. The girl could sense the crystal Orpheon had found on Ilum as easily as she could feel the sack of healing crystals she routinely carried. She did not mention it though, everyone was allowed some secrets. She did offer patience and reassurance that when the time was right, she w guide him in the crafting of his own lightsaber. Until that time, she encouraged him to carry his sidearm and trust his fellow force users to intervene should something turn violent. In the back of her mind she hoped against hope that this would not be another Mon Cal in the making. The world certainly had the capability for it.

Between training, Leena spent time in quiet meditation, focused on cleansing herself and the ship from any tendrils of darkness. If Felucia was indeed plagued, they would need a bastion to operate from. The aged Naboo royal freighter would serve well enough at first.

Finally, an excited squeak and shudder about the ship announced their drop from hyperspace. Leena stood with the others, taking in the view of the world. Aside from a lack of traffic overhead, the world looked as normal as anyone could imagine. ‘Just like Mon Cal,’ she mused darkly to herself.

It did not take much time to break into the atmosphere of the planet, their Squib pilot sending encoded transmissions out an all frequency hailing any other Jedi or Rebel relief forces that might already be in the area. there was no sense setting up a second base camp if there was already someplace established.

As the Royalest Royalty Racer made its way to the surface of the planet of Felucia, Orpheon took time to practice what Leena had taught him during travel. Since keeping his eyes open was not necessary at the moment, he closed his burning red eyes and focused on the Sight. He was becoming increasily proficient at the skill and was soon embraced by the strength of the storm and allowed his power to reach out to the planet. Unlike Ilum, this planet felt truly alive. An abundance of the Force was everywhere. Plants and animals seemed to cover every inch of this world.

"This is amazing!"

He exclaimed softly as they drew closer and closer to the surface. When he felt them about to land, he mag locked his vibrosword to his waist, and ensured his blaster was fully charged. Giving a silent nod to Leena and the Mantis, he was ready, or so he hoped.

“See if you can get some rest.” Sandy placed a cool hand on the forehead of the sweating human child, he was shivering despite his temperature as his body struggled with his malady. She could sense the dull ache of his pain, and the sweating pustules that formed along his lymph nodes. Horrifying pain, and he continued to cry softly as she soothed him with the force. Letting him fall into a dreamless sleep. But as she pulled her hand away from the child’s head, the force moved in its undetectable current, flowing and beckoning to the Jedi Master as if the small hairs on the nape of her neck were being tickled by a wind. It was a familiar presence, one that she had known fairly well during a recent mission to Scarif. She let her pale green eyes close and reached back out in the force.

Leena

The situation was much worse on the ground. And even the breathing apparatus that she had placed over her mouth and nose were unlikely to stop whatever this was. And the thundering presence of the dark side echoed throughout the planet.

The travel-weary ship landed on the ancient stone landing platform outside the crumbling, jungle consumed ruins that were once a Jedi Temple. Before they even landed, Leena’s body was tense. She could feel the tug of the dark side. It was strong here, unnaturally so. as the landing gear creaked and grated beneath the weight of the ship, the trio of force users made ready to disembark. Leena scurried to the ship’s supplies, the medical gear they had intended for Ilum, and quickly found several masks and sets of elbow length sterile gloves. She offered some of both to her companions. The Mantis turned them down in favor of the body-sealed armor he already was wearing.

Handing some to Orpheus, Leena donned the bulky filtered mask herself. It made her look more like an insect than she would have preferred, but until they knew what they were dealing with. Advanced personal protective equipment was the order. “We don’t know what this illness is yet Orpheus. Be careful. Felucia is full of life but it also harbors some inherent darkness. Even so, the dark side feels strong here. Guard yourself. Remember the exercise we practiced to clear the dark side. Practice it within, frequently. Even your own mind and body may seek to betray you here. We all must watch out for one another and pull our companions back if the darkness finds a foothold.”

As the loading ramp for the ship jolted downward with a bang on the stone beneath, Leena made to descend, stopped by the outstretched hand of her companion and protector. The darkness practically was palpable in the air. Beneath his white robes and armored form, the Corellian frowned. Danger was present in greater percentage. What that danger was, nobody knew and where the dark side was concerned, he took no chances.

Striding down the ramp first, his body tense and every sense alert to anything amiss, The Mantis surveyed the empty platform for a full

minute before motioning the others down. He grabbed the Chiss apprentice’s arm as the man passed, leaning close to hiss, “Be on your guard. Things will not always be as they seem.” He let go of Orpheus’ arm and backed away into the overgrowth about the platform; practically evaporating from sight and from sense, even the force, before their eyes.

Leena followed down the ramp, offering Orpheus a half-smile that did little to shield the look of concerned determination in her eyes. Her heart was heavy as she felt on a practical metaphysical level the overpowering death and illness that permeated the world about them.  “Ah my guardian angel,”

“Why don’t you go find Master Sarna and tell her we have arrived. See what she wants from us or where she wants us to set up the Ilum supplies. We even have a pair of bacta tanks. I start unloading here.”

Leena turned to go back up the ramp, pausing to call out over her shoulder, finally offering a genuinely warm smile; ”Oh, and Orpheus. May the force be with you.”

Orpheon could not control his eyes widening as Leena asked him to find Master Sarna on his own. While he believed he was fully capable of completing this task on his own, he was slightly surprised she had asked it of him. He did not know the Jedi he was searching for nor where they were located. But as she stated before returning to the ship, the Force would be with him. Taking a deep breath, he set off into the jungle world of Felucia. As he walked through the giant plants and trees, he could feel sweat beginning to bead on his forehead and start to run down his back as he walked. The air was thick with humidity and the Initiate was regretting wearing the jacket he had taken from the Temple. Sticking his hand in the pocket instinctively, he felt the crystal he had discovered on Ilum. Oddly enough, what had once felt warm on the ice cold planet, now felt cool to the touch here on the tropical world of Felucia. Removing the stone from his pocket he held it between his fingers, rotating it, examining all of the silver veins running within. The Chiss allowed his vision to shift into light infrared his kind was capable of and he was surprised that the item registered no heat of any kind. He would have thought for sure there would be some kind of heat after feeling it on Ilum.

While focus was normally considered a good thing within the Jedi Order, the focus with which Orpheon turned to this crystal, to the exclusion of the world around him could have dangerous outcomes.  A shadow fell over the young Chiss as he slowly walked through the jungle. He continued to focus on the crystal in his hand, the ominous shadow unnoticed. He only stopped and looked up when the hairs on the back of his neck arose, and the instinct to roll to the side was unstoppable. He leapt to the side, tucking into a ball and rising to his feet, blaster in hand as what looked like a large ray passed through the spot he had once occupied.

His eyes widened as the he noticed the rows of sharp teeth coming at him once again. Pushing forward he rolled one again and came up on his feet, this time sword in his opposite hand. As he prepared for the next lunge, he seemed to feel like he was on a track, like something was once more pushing him in a certain direction. He knew exactly where to raise his arm, the direction to flick his wrist, and where to aim his blaster. And so he followed through.

Before he even realized it, the creature down on the ground, a smoking hole in its underbelly, and a large gash cutting from wing to wing. Sweat rolled down his face, his shirt sticking to his chest and his breath coming in smooth gasps. Rising to his feet he looked at his weapon and noticed the blood streaming down the blade. He quickly wiped it clean and sheathed it. He felt for the crystal in his pocket, relieved it was still in his possession. Resolving to focus more on the task at hand, he continued on his path, soon coming to the village he assumed he was meant to arrive at.

Another human child lay choking on vomit at the back of the small temporary shelter, more a mix of discarded fibroplast containers than any kind of house, Sandy scooped her up and held her close as she walked out of the dim and reeking hovel. The only survivor of a family of seven. And from her fibrilic shaking, this one did not have much time left. The disease had already progressed to such a level that the skin above the welting sores under the girls arms was starting to deteriorate, mixing the acrid smell of vomit and sweat with the sweet sick of decay.

The girls spasmodic movements slackened as Sandy pressed her close, walking her back towards where the mobile medical depot had been set up at the edges of the village. It was a strangely long walk. Lonely and barren. The close packed shelters strangely silent except for the buzzing of flies. Another village of refugees devastated. Where had these come from? The remains of the scavenged bulk cruiser that made up the central meeting area of the village could have been from anywhere. But the lone mass driver round that still was logged in the aft section marked it as either from Coruscant or Chandrila. Another swath of victims of the Sith and the Mandalorians. They had sought safety amongst the jungle, and had found a terrible death instead.

She ducked to clear one of the overhanging branches and waved one of the MediCorps who stood beside the speeder in his white robe. He gave her a nod and bent back over his patient. Sandy saw from a side glance that a lone Chiss was approaching the village on foot. She held up a hand to stop him but lowered it just as quickly, feeling that he was a force user, and one that carried the equipment of a jedi apprentice. She turned the gesture into a wave for him to come closer, she pressed the dying child into his arms and led him to the medical transports.

“Three survivors out of maybe a hundred. Stay calm, no mask can stop this plague, it is born by other methods. Access the force and use it to strengthen your immune system. Then when you have done that, join me in trying to save this girl’s life.” She let her green eyes flicker to the blood that coated a part of his uniform. Not human at least. "And remember to draw your sword at the very last. Do not rely on it in this jungle of death."

It was not the most friendly of greetings, but it was all the Jedi Master could manage after two days of this work. She pressed her hand onto the girls head beside the crook of his arm and began to pull heavily on the living force. The dark side lay like a thick blanket over everyone and everything, but the living force was still alive here. Just smothered.

It was a simple matter of using the grav sled to wheel the bulky equipment off the ship and onto the pad. It went even quicker with the Squib’s assistance. As soon as the gear was off, he offered a salute to the Jedi and scurried back up the ramp and blasted back into the sky intent on returning to his fellows across the galaxy.

Leena stopped for a moment and stood, surveilling the jungles and path that led to the abandoned temple. Orpheus had traipsed off into the overgrowth; a move that had surprised Leena, but she trusted that the force would guide him. He was new to the ways of the Jedi, but seasoned by life. The Healer knew that he could take care of himself. A world like this would serve as an excellent test for the man. It would force the darkness in everyone to the surface. It was a darkness that would either be confronted and driven back or take ahold and attempt to rule each of them. Leena could only trust that the darkness of the storm that ravaged within her apprentice was not too strong. She would watch him; but there were greater needs on this world. Leena needed to focus on them. The thought troubled her. Orpheus could survive if he trusted in the force.

Staring out at the silent jungle, Leena could sense the oddity of it all. Life that ought to teem was silent amongst the overgrowth. It was not the silence of a passing predator or disturbing wind. No, this was something different. It was as if death had dug his icy jagged fingernails into the world and began to shake the life out of it starting with the smallest and frailest first.

Shaking her head to clear the encroaching fog of darkness loose, Leena diverted her focus back to the task at hand. She had to get this little bit of gear to the temple. It was as good a place as any to set up shop. The sooner the better. As soon as she heard back from Master Sarna and her team, the Jedi healer could get to work. Keying the grav sled, Leena began to maneuver it down the path towards the sprawling ancient stone complex.

In the undergrowth The Mantis followed along silently, his presence masked within the life and death that swirled about the world. Expertly he moved through the brush, barely disturbing a leaf in his passing. His every sense scanning the surroundings on the waves of the force probing for unforeseen dangers.

Once inside the yawning tunnel entrance to the temple, Leena activated several glolamps. Their light pierced the darkness with an eerie glow against the blackness.

Pausing, Leena placed her hand against the mossy stone exposed exterior. She could feel the residual radiation of the countless Jedi who had passed through this very doorway, the goodness, the training, the hope. This place was good.

Moving further inwards, Leena was able to locate a control panel and turn on the banks of overhead lights, their warm glow driving back the shadows. Maneuvering her supplies, Leena’s footsteps echoed through the halls as she made her way to what was once a an expansive hall, a cafeteria or a training hall of sorts.  The Mon Cal nodded to herself, this would do.

Upon arriving at the village, Orpheon was surprised to have a small child shoved into his arms. He could smell the sickness and death radiating not only from her, but also the village as a whole. He looked down into her eyes, seeing the fear, pain, and despair. He tried to hold back the tear forming, blinking away the moisture before offering her a small smile. He hoped that smile nicety might pluck her hope and keep her spirits just a little higher. Taking several steps toward the Jedi who had thrust her to him.

"Master, I have not yet been trained in that skill. I am not afraid of this virus. If this is the means by which I....."

He looked down at the child in his arms, her eyes looking up at him. He could tell she was afraid of the word he did not want to say. The word that if he said it, she knew it applied to her.

"If you could teach it to me, then perhaps I could assist you in saving her, saving them all."

Sandy let her tired green eyes find his and let a soft smile spread ascross her lips. “Of course.” She gestured to where the medical orderlies were clustered around several of the other survivors, and indicated two of the jumpseats that were next to the stretcher marked for the victim he was carrying. When he had set her down Sandy put her hand on top of his, her oice low as she spoke, and the force moving through her into the child.

“First we must touch the living force, let it flow through you, through your center. Now guide it.” She moved her other hand long his arm to where his heart lay. “Gather it, and let it expand throughout the rest of your body. This malady is of the darkside, isolate where it gathers in yourself. Then exile it into the flow of the force.” She watched him. Then placed her hands back onto the small child.

“Watch and feel what I do. This is much the same but we must use a bit more of ourselves. We must overwhelm the darkness in her, and guide the shadow from her.”

The force stirred again. So much so that the jedi master’s hands began to glow from it. The light flowing from her hands into the small shivering form. “Guide it to where the disease is manifesting.” The glowing lines traced the child’s bloodflow, gathering in pools along her organs and lymph nodes. "Then draw it like poison from a wound." Slowly building, until finally Sandy drew it back out of her. The darkness banished before the light. But it took its toll and the Jedi Master was left even more exhausted.

For while they might be able to treat an isolated case here and there, they had not found the heart of the disease. For that was in the forest itself.

A GR-75 medium transport popped out of hyperspace within the vicinity of Felucia, escorted by a pair of obsolete Y-Wings that kept a generous distance from the ship. The transport broadcast an automated signal as it descended towards the planet, repeating on an exact sequence its callsign and a request to land at the Jedi Temple. More heavily encrypted information followed in this sequence, clarifying that it had been sent from Nar Shaddaa on an express courier mission from Grandmaster Draygo, and that it carried a cargo of medical supplies and droids. Judging from the perfect frequency at which the sequence repeated, it would soon become clear to the Temple’s traffic control that the transport was piloted solely by computer--not a single living sapient was aboard the ship.

After it was granted permission to land, a second automated message was transmitted by the ship as the clamshelled transport descended through the atmosphere.

“Apologies, Sarna, this was the best I could do on short notice. The ship’s main cargo is medical supplies--mix of everything, the initial reports were rather confused from a technical standpoint. Also, just shy of two thousand droids. They’re not too talkative, but I’m told that they have basic lifesaving protocols and they’ll at least make decent scouts.”

A brief technical summary was attached to the ship’s manifesto, making clear to note several times in large red characters that, despite the reinforced chassis and sunken faceplate of the Sentinels clearly implicated them as being designed as battle droids, they were utterly incapable of taking offensive action. Their built-in comlinks, however, recommended them for service as scouts to make first contact with settlements potentially afflicted by the plague.

Once the GR-75 transport settled with the painstaking slowness indicative of a droid pilot, a dozen of the droids disembarked. Their glowing yellow slats scanned down the length of the ship, before quietly plodding along its flanks to lend their strength in unloading its cargo. Indeed, they were far from talkative: when the organic deck crews interrogated the plastoid brutes of their purpose, they merely responded with an electronic beep and a terse, rumbling, “Assist disembark. Alternate directive?”

It did not take Leena long to set up the small amount of supplies she had brought; a pair of bacta tanks and several med beds accompanied by several crates of supplies, bacta patches, infusions and the like. It was a hurried job albeit, but there was much that needed done.

As the young Jedi Knight hurried back down the wide hallway towards the landing pad, she wondered where Orpheus had gotten to. She hoped he had found Sandy. The apprentice was ok, she could feel it. At least she hoped so. Having trained under so many masters in the Circle of Healing, she really was not sure how the traditional Master-Apprentice was supposed to go. Maybe such a bond needed more work. She had no doubt the Chiss had the potential to become a great and powerful Jedi. There was just a nagging feeling that concerned her. It was the darkness of the storm Orpheon had mentioned. She could feel it. Leena knew that The Mantis, her shadowy guardian could as well. It was something that if the Jedi-in-Training did not come to terms with, Leena could only prevent for so long. The Jensaarai were even less forgiving than the Jedi on such things.

Elsewhere in the sprawling temple complex, the arrival of droids and supplies was beginning to become apparent. Catching the message on her comlink, Leena turned and scurried back into the darkened hallways of the mostly abandoned temple. It did not take 10 minutes to run into a handful of droids with their payload. Quickly, the girl directed them towards her makeshift  ward. Wherever Sandy, Orpheon, and the others were, they’d need this place up and functional. The Mon Cal healer longed to go and help on the front lines. She knew better though. It would have been a brief surge of positivity that would only be drowned out by the tidal surge of darkness. This base, a bastion of light and healing, would allow them to take a stand against this dark menace.
