Background:

Kenan Ta'ara, alias Kalen Lorell, is the older brother of Emerald Ta'ara by birth. When Emerald was born, her parents grew fearful that someone, likely Emerald's Aunt Terelda, would try to eliminate their older child because of his inferior gender and their social status did not look kindly on passing such great wealth and status on to a male child. This came true when the boy Kenan suffered an ill-conceived attempt on his life, a masked assailant who escaped apprehension endeavoring to murder him during a state dinner. After this occurred, it was decided that Kenan would assume a new name and was sent away from the home he shared with the young Emerald and his parents. Emerald had always been told that "Kalen" was no relative of hers, and mourned the absence of her friend, attributing the relocation to the status of his "real" mother as a Duchess on Relephon in the Rifle Worlds. His cutthroat nature, obtained honestly by the women who surrounded him, gave him an edge over others in business school, and he dropped out when boredom set in and he remained generally friendless.

When Terelda removed Emerald from the care of the Nobles Ta'ara, intending that she should seize the crown of the Hapes Consortium, she was cut off from contact with Kalen for many years.

Kalen quickly found himself getting involved in the gateway to organized crime. He hit every casino he could find. His penchant for smart gambles and his eidetic memory ran him afoul of many casino owners, but even so, he prided himself that he could win any match without cheating, and soon won the title "Oracle of the Underworld".

His skills garnered the attention of a shady entity who approached him, claiming to be a representative of the Sith, and demanding that he sabotage the financial future of a Kuatian parts manufacturing company. He tracked the heirs to the company, a pair of twins, Ellique and Armand Shesh, to Ord Mantell, and used his charm to convince Ellique to bet fifteen million credits of her family's money in a sabacc tournament, which he went on to win. However, the contact that hired him was displeased at how the situation was handled and threatened to have him killed, and Ellique's family also demanded his head.

Following Ord Mantell, Kalen went underground for a time, honing other skills at his whim and passing interest. His charm opened doors for him and soon he was studying under a renowned Bith scientist on Artus Prime, where he made the acquaintance of Sapphire, Emerald's soon-to-be best friend.

Several methods of interpreting and tracking algorithms that he learned from his Bith mentor made him a whiz in the Coruscant stock trade, and his fortune only grew until he was wrongfully accused of insider trading. A sinister figure had been following him, wanting him dead for some time, and Kalen quickly went underground, changing his identity once more to fit in at a white-collar temp firm, where he quickly got involved in show business, not least of all thanks to the help of his adopted sister, Kallysa Lorell. Kallysa introduced him to what would become the team he most regularly collaborated with: Iryn Danyel, a highly sought-after Bith recording artist; Ephie Prink, an eye-catching Zeltron in charge of hair; Synuh, a Kiffar whose career as an actor was over, but his expertise in covering his own ritual tattoos for various roles meant that he was a wizard with makeup; Brask and Jorl, a pair of Rodians whose steady hands had won them an award for their camera work on As Corellia Turns; and last, but certainly not least, Alira Lyz, a chocolate-complected firebrand of a woman serving as a director and vision-caster.
