I Prefer Space Travel Over Some Places I've Been (Fin)

Alright, this is dedicated to Andon. It's not that great, and it feels awkward at times, but I felt like writing it, so I'm going to post it.

So there.

***

I knew I wasn’t going to like Hoth the moment I stepped foot on the planet’s icy surface. The wind drove hard, throwing bits of frozen water through the cracks in my shiny golden casing. Not that, I reflected mournfully, it would stay shiny for long. I shuffled through the snow as fast as my servomotors could carry me, hoping that inside the shield doors it would be at least a few degrees warmer.

As soon as I stepped foot inside the base, I heard a familiar rude twitter. “I don’t know why we had to come to this freezing place,” I commented to my counterpart. His reply was short and brusque. “Yes, I know the asteroid field makes it a good hiding spot for the Alliance; I just don’t understand why we always seem to end up on the worst planets in the galaxy. Why can’t the Alliance form a base somewhere nice, like on Naboo?”

Artoo ignored me and whirred off. I followed him, heading towards the Princess’ chambers. When I arrived, I saw the Princess had already left for the command center. She was very hard-working for a human being. A cargo droid whirred up slowly behind me and deposited her luggage. I lifted a bag to the bed and began to unpack. Princess Leia didn’t have nearly enough clothing for someone of her rank. All of her possessions had been packed in two small cases. I shook my head in disapproval. There was a time when I served Captain Antilles that we escorted a princess from the Y’Toub system. She had had fifteen large pieces of luggage, most of which carried her extensive wardrobe. Now that, I reflected, had been proper for a princess.

In very little time, I had Princess Leia’s bags unpacked. I neatly organized her clothes in the closet and stored the cases away. My joints were stiff; my internal thermometer informed me that it was -15 C degrees, and I mimicked a shiver. How the humans were going to survive in this climate I really didn’t know.

My task complete, I headed toward the command center to report in. I was almost there when Captain Solo came striding down the narrow hallway. “Hey, Goldenrod!” he called, addressing me by an insulting term, “Is the Princess unpacked?”

I ignored the nickname, as my programming dictated. “Yes, Captain Solo. Although I must say that it is--”

“Where is she?”

“In the command center, Captain S--”

He strode off without another word. “Well, really!” I exclaimed.

As I checked in at the center and received my assignment, I continued to puzzle over human behavior. Why couldn’t they be more logical, like droids? I was programmed to understand them, but over and over it appeared to me that my programming was incomplete.

I stopped wondering and focused on the task I had been assigned to. As I did, I caught sight of myself in the reflective properties of a comm panel. My plating was marred already by the corrosive elements in this planet’s atmosphere. Oh, dear.

Hmm, I wonder if it wasn't too much thinking for a droid, I'm not sure that he would ignore the nickname as such, rather than respond because he recognized that it was himself being addressed. I think he likely should have had more wordy of thoughts as well...

I mean, it was a good idea, it's just not quite clicking as Threepio narrative to me. And it's a good short fic, nice POV thing... just not quite there yet. I don't know what's just not clicking right for me to explain it, though.

I like your personification of Artoo. I don't know why everyone likes him, he strikes me as a very rude little droid.

Just when I thought it was over, I watched Tiana kick Almira in the head, effectively putting her out of her misery. I did not expect that.

Yeah, I totally think Artoo's sassy.

You captured my feelings on this peice, T. I'm meh about it. But considering I wrote it in ten minutes....

I'm glad people enjoyed it. I just got an urge and carried it out. Blah.

This is a great piece of work!

The only think I am not sure of is 3PO himself. Can he think? Have emotions? I know he could get learned behavior through reactions of humans over time, but he is younger than Artoo and had his memory wiped once so he had to start his programming from scratch around 20BBY.

But that is a more Watto's Shop question
