  • 2 weeks later...

A hot world, Selvaris orbited Centis Major and Renaant, the twin suns of the Tantara system, which continually bathed the planet in oppressive heat and humidity. The aquamarine oceans of Selvaris teemed with life, providing shellfish and fish for food. Its forests and jungles were also bountiful, providing many forms of fruits and vegetables.

The Rebel Cruiser Freedom's Reprieve came out of hyperspace above the planet Selvaris. Pointing to the single moon that orbited the planet, Kira gave the order for a hidden outpost to be sited there for early detection, defence and security precautions.

Kira had briefed her Officers in regards to two locations for bases on the planet. One was to be under water and was to be totally undetectable from space, the other was to be dug into the mountains, also undectable. The Officers were dismissed to carry out their tasks and Kira made her way back to her quarters to relax for a while. If anyone wanted her they would know where to find her.

Jedi Knight Onderin Starlisk listened to Kira give orders around the ship. It seemed that the Alliance was to be setting up a pair of new bases. Selvaris was a beautiful world, similar to Mon Calamari which the Freedom's Reprieve origionated on.

He headed down to Kirana's quarters. He needed to speak to her about finishing her almost completely unknown Jedi training that he had begun with her. She had progressed brilliantly and he felt that now she had a firm enough handle in the Force to finish up.

Approaching the door to her quarters, Onderin knocked and entered. "Kira? We need to talk about finishing your training."

"Come in Onderin. You have something in mind regarding training?"

Kira was sitting behind her desk organising various instructions for the Rebel detachment she had with her and going through the data reports that had already come in from the surface.

She'd given Lt Ripley her instructions to oversee the bases construction personally and was waiting on her report regarding the current progress.

A military convoy, bearing supplies and equipment for the defense of the Alliance bases at Selvaris, emerges from hyperspace. The officer in charge sends an encrypted communique to Vice-Admiral Kirana Sunrider.

--encrypted comm--

I bring greetings to you from your colleague, Vice Admiral Forn Dodonna. We carry equipment for the defense of this Alliance outpost, and wish to debark immediately

[what follows is a list of the cargo]

48 B-wing/E starfighters

48 A-wing starfighters

48 E-wing Type B starfighters

48 X-wing XJ3 starfighters

3 Golan III defense platforms

--end comm--

The thirty-six Skipray Blastboats, having provided escort for the convoy, leave the world behind, entering hyperspace for their true destination.

Onderin listened to the incoming transmission. He wondered vaguely for a moment what the use of the bases being undetectable was when there were going to be three Golan III's in the space around the planet. If the Alliance didn't want to be detected, then orbital defense platforms was not the way to go.

The Jedi Knight turned his mind to the present. "Yes," he said in response to Kira's inquiry. "I understand how pressing your duties are now that you have been promoted to Vice-Admiral. However, your Jedi training is never going to be finished if we do not take action for it to be so. I'd like to steal you away as soon as possible to make a trip to Ilum. It wouldn't take more than a few days."

He kind of felt bad asking this of her, but it had been her desire to become a Jedi Knight. It was her responsibility as much as his to see that task completed. And after the trip to Ilum and her Jedi trials, he could be done with her and allow her to take all of her time in her duties with the Rebellion.

Flying in his Exael Mark II, the Alhazard touches down in the base's hidden hangar. Ganelon steps out, glad to be out of the base at Gala where he spent the last few weeks in tedious administrative duty behind a desk.

He makes his way to the command center, stopping to pour himself a deep cup of black, steaming coffee, with extra cream and sugar added. Always the old campaigner, he observes the arrival of Forn and the Golans.

"You know," he mentions lazily to an officer on duty, "if you wanted to hide ourselves better from Imperial detection, it might be a good idea to try hiding those golans as mining asteroids kept in orbit. It'd take some work, but I'm sure we can have enough volunteers to get right on it." He yawns, then procures a rolled up newspaper from under his arm. "If you'll excuse me, I'll be in my quarters for the time being."

Kira could understand Onderin wanting to complete her Jedi training, and it would be good to complete it so that she could focus solely on the Rebellion. She would have to work in a few days leeway as soon as she could. Until the base was completed though she doubted she would be able to get away. She was still waiting on Lt Ripley to report in on her progress and if need be would leave her in charge while she went to complete her training.

"I'll see what I can do about finding a few days for training as soon as we get the base running smoothly." She smiled at him, "I know I have to complete the training and once that is done I imagine you have someone else in mind to train..." She gave him a wink. He was a good Jedi Master.

She turned her attention back to the pressing matters infront of her... Now, these Golans... How are we going to camoflauge them? The starfighters would be distributed between the bases and outpost, they were the easy part.

"Onderin, do you think you can site and camoflauge these Golans. We want to keep this base relatively secret for as long as possible and as they are, they stick out like a sore thumb."

She looked down at the datapads and reports infront of her. A message had come in from an officer in the mountain base with a suggestion regarding disguising the Golan's as mining asteroids. She handed that one over to Onderin.

"See if that's practical. I don't care how they are disguised as long as they are. Paint them, cover them I don't mind what you do with them." She indicated the piles of messages infront of her, "At this rate I'll be here until midnight with all this paperwork"

Onderin smiled with a corner of his mouth as Kira voiced his concern with the Golan IIIs. He could tell that she had not been expecting them along with the fighters. Yes, he would come up with a way to hide them, no matter what it took.

"I'll get to work on it right away. Vice-Admiral," he added before walking out.

He was already formulating possibilities. The Alliance had no way of getting their hands on a cloaking device, much less three, so he would have to be creative. The Commander had studied many problems like this during his time with CorSec before he had become a Jedi. The asteroid disguise would not work, for asteroids this close to the planet would be pulled in by its gravity.

A mirror or painting would not help very much, for when looking down on the planet, one should not see stars, he thought as he headed to his quarters. Onderin thought of other possibilities, but they were few and elusive.

After a good amount of time in his quarters, the Jedi Knight had formulated something that may do the trick, and also help hide the Alliance's bases, which were already nigh impossible to locate without already knowing where they were.

If he found some element found in asteroids that was very magnetic and was produced naturally, then he could fill the single moon of Selvaris with it. He would have to have the Alliance's workers clear a pocket of room in it using thermal detenators and then pour the liquidized metal or stone inside.

That would completely disrupt any sensor readings naturally. All he would have to do is hide the Golans visually. Not a cloaking device, but something almost similar would do the job. If thousands of cameras were set over the surface of each defense platform, constantly taking pictures of what was before them and projecting that image holographically on the opposite side, then it would give the appearance that nothing was there at all.

He sent a comm to Kirana, "I have a plan that would require some time and money, but would effectively make the platforms invisible. With your compliance I shall order the materials the task demands."

Yes, that would do perfectly, he thought.

Receiving the comm, Kira replies that he is to go ahead with whatever is necessary to get the job done. In the mean time she would head down to the surface and inspect the bases construction first hand.

She headed down to the hanger bay after letting the bridge crew know where she could be located if an emergency arose and took a fighter craft down to the mountain base.

She stepped out and took a deep breath of the fresh air. She'd been too long in the recycled air of ships lately and needed to clear her lungs with nice, pure, fresh air.

After a long moment she turned and headed into the base, heading to the mess hall to get a meal and a caffa.

Onderin receives the answer and then sends a comm to Officer Black requesting the necessary supplies for the job.

The plan was a good one, he allowed himself to think with a bit of pride. It wasn't every day that such a situation came up, and even fewer times was there someone on hand with the correct knowledge to remedy the situation.

All he really had to do know was wait for the materials to arrive via shuttle or some other transport. This would be quite an undertaking, Onderin knew, and he would need to get a team ready to start the excavation of the moon right after they arrived.

It would only be a matter of time, however, until the base was not only securely built and invisible, but it had three Golan Defense Platforms just as invisible as it to protect it.

Having successfully completed another ferry run, the four Nebulon-B frigates chartered by the Rebel Alliance from unknown and untraceable sources emerged above the placid world of Selvaris. Shuttlecrafts began to emerge from the larger ships almost immediately, and the unloading of the life forms and beings brought from the Mon Calamari system was conducted as expeditiously as was possible. The ships did not stay in the system for very long; as soon as the unloading was complete, they reentered hyperspace, making sure to erase any records of having been in the system.

The base would remain hidden.

A tired looking Ripley entered the mess hall and stumbled her way over to Kirana. Her grey overalls were smeared with grease and her long hair pulled back into a tight bun. Her face was also grimy and she seriously looked like she neede a good nights sleep and a shower.

" Vice-Admiral. You'll have to accept my appologies for not making my report to you. Ive been terribly busy over-seeing the construction of the bases. It was easy on Hoth because there was and old base that just needed to be reworked, but this task is so much bigger." She exhaled and paused for a moment. " There have been a few set-backs abut the good news is we're working our way through them."

Ripley asked to be excused then retrived herself a cup of coffeee and returned. "So on a more personal note, how are things with you? You said something in your message about going away for a while."

"That's alright Ripley, I can see the progress that's been made already. It's all looking good. Now, for the personal note. Onderin wishes to complete my training - that's why I'll need a couple of days leeway. All on the hush you understand." Kira gave a wink, "For those that aren't involved in the construction or relocation of the Mon Calamarian's, I want them training. My battle sense tells me that we might be needed soon."

She would have to see how Onderin was going with those Golan's too. As soon as that job was completed they would go. She felt that the ground forces she had been training would need the extra training in preparations as well so went into detail with Lt Ripley over the grenade, sniper & range practices as well as simulation practice on urban warfare.

She sipped at her caffa, lists of tasks running through her mind for what else was needed.

"Can you think of anything else we might need to do before I disappear for the few days?"

Ripley thought about kiranas' question for a few minutes.

"No, I think you've covered just about everything. All I really have to say, is good luck with your trials." Ripley smiled at Kirana.

Before Kirana could go Ripley suddenly had a more serious question to ask.

"There is one thing,if we are called to arms how will I get hold you of you....How soon dod you think it will be before we may have to go into battle. I mean....will you have enough time to complete your training?"

It was a concern of Ripleys' that when the time came, she would be all alone and be an inadequite leader. She had commanded ships and workcrews before, but never led troops into a full- scale battle. The idea was somewhat daunting.

Kira handed Ripley a datapad.

"This has my personal communicator frequency on it so you will know how to reach me if you need to. I'm hoping that we won't take too long with these trials. If it comes to it, we'll just have to interupt them and go back to them at a later date."

She finished her caffa and contemplated having another. Looking at her chrono she decided she had better not.

"Ok Ripley. Show me what has been completed so far, I've got time for a quick tour and then I must get back up to the Freedom's Reprieve"

Ripley took Kirana on a tour of the mountain side base.

"We dug deep into the mountain side, from the air you cant see anything the rock is dense and because of its compostion sensor scans cannot penetrate it. So far we've built a working landing bay, command center and some space for training the troops. "Ripley motioned to a large open space filled with rebel comandos going through the motions."At the moment its not anything really sophisticated but it'll do for training the troops. Living quarters are next on the agenda."

The tour had led Kirana to the command center.

"Now as for the technical aspects." Ripley punched a few keys on a control panel and holographic blueprints appeared as Ripley talked Kirana through them. 'We started off by reinforcing the bases structure with a high powered force field. This should keep the base intact and also act as a protective barrier should the location ever be found. In the woods just outside we had planted several automated lookout posts." Ripley punched several more keys coming up with the lookouts schematics. " They are fully automated and all the data comes straight back here, they have robotic defenses which if need be can be controlled automatically. These outposts are also masked by natural rock formations which makes them undetectable. should they be under risk of being discovered they will automatically destroy themselves."

Ripley led Kirana out of the command center and back out intothe main complex. They walked past the hanger bay and carried on walking. When they arrived at their destination there were several technicians busily at work on a huge device.

"This is a heavy duty ion cannon, a shot from this can disable a Star Destroyer. We are embeding it deep into the rock and building an opening mechanism which will allowus to fire it through a hole in the montains side. The hole will be sealed at alltimes when the cannon is inactive and like the rest of the place willbe force-fielded and undetectable."

The tour was over.

"I guess thats everything so far. Weare having much more trouble with the underwater base, as you can imagine. Ive got some Calamarians working on the initial structure as they ae much more adept at building underwater structures. I was about to clean up and then head down there to make sure thing are alright. Would you like to come to take a look ? or is it time for you to depart?"

Kira had been very impressed with the work that Ripley had completed so far. The base construction was right on track and should be completed according to schedule.

"I'll leave the construction in your capable hands Ripley. You're doing an excellent job. I'll inspect it once it's completed but I'm very impressed with what you've accomplished so far. Excellent work."

They changed direction, heading back towards the hanger. She would head back up to the Freedom's Reprieve and wait for Onderin to report. She would also recall Gabriel Zion from Mon Calamari. He'd be perfect for a personal aide and bodyguard. She'd been thinking lately that if Forn and Black had bodyguards that she would need one also. Not that the need had arose so far but you could never tell what the future held.

"Here's my comm frequency and co-ordinants of where to meet incase of the coming assault being brought forward. I have to duck off for a few days. Onderin wants to complete my training - just keep that quiet though. If anyone asks I'm away on secret official business. May the Force be with You Ripley."

She boarded her starfighter and ran the usual checks before lifting off and heading back up to the cruiser. Once on board she headed to her state room to send the comms and to wait for Onderin's progress report.

While waiting for Onderin to show up, a strange sensation came over her. She had been sitting back in her chair, her mind going over what else had to be done when she felt something through the Force. Death... loss... centering around a friend. Her face paled as she struggled to comprehend what might have happened. She wasn't sure if she could trust those feelings or not.

After regaining her composure somewhat, Kira received the comm from Forn. 'So that was it... Black's dead. Oh Jack what have you done??

She quickly headed out towards the hanger, leaving word with one of the bridge officers to let Commander Onderin know where she was going and that he was in charge in her absence. Also that Captain Zion would be arriving sometime but she wasn't certain when.

She entered her starfighter, ran the usual checks and took off for Hypori.

An encrypted call is sent to Selvaris, to the attention of the commander of the Mediator-class cruiser Freedom's Reprieve. The comm is from the Vice-Admiral of the Alliance, Forn Dodonna, and orders the warship to make all speed to link up with the Rebel forces at Hypori. Within an hour, the ship is ready to depart, and in keeping with the orders, streaks off into hyperspace, taking a roundabout and untraceable route.

Kira's starfighter emerged from hyperspace to find the Freedom's Reprieve leaving on exercise. A message came through letting her know that her personal belongings had been transfered down to the mountain base planet side so she changed course, heading for the hidden hanger.

A short time later the new Admiral was escorted to her new office and adjoining quarters. She entered the spacious rooms, noting that they had the freshly painted smell and took in the rich royal blue carpets and warm white walls. A large holo screen was along one wall, giving the illusion of looking out onto the ocean. The remainder of the room was tastefully decorated. She had the box of datapads and recordings taken down to be decrypted and word to be given as soon as the task had been completed.

She moved through to her quarters to see that they were equally spacious and decorated in a manner depicting her new rank. How the word had filtered through already was beyond her but these things had a habit of getting out regardless of how locked down the information was. She put a call through to the mess hall that a meal be brought up and that she would be in her quarters if anyone needed her. Also putting through a call to Onderin and to Gabriel Zion as to where they could find her.

She grabbed a change of clothes and went through to her ensuite, delighting in the deep spa bath that had been installed. She filled it and gratefully slid into it, sighing as the warm bubbling waters soothed her tension away. On Hypori she had suddenly felt a huge weight being placed upon her shoulders. She had alot to live up to and would do her best to fill the void Black had left behind.

A while later and feeling much refreshed, Kira emerged from the ensuite dressed in a loose blue caftan that she prefered to wear when off duty. She would get a good night's rest before having to deal with the new pressures her rank held for her. A knock on the door heralded her meal and she gave permission for the kitchen hand to enter. She left the meal on the table, offered a smart salute before leaving. Kira sat down to enjoy her meal, wondering if the men would call in to see her that night or if it would be the following morning.

Onderin headed down for Kirana's quarters. He needed to speak to her about her Jedi training. She was ready for the trials, but he needed her to go to Ilum with him and build her lightsaber first.

Reaching the Admiral's quarters, Onderin knocked and entered. He stood before her and crossed his arms relaxedly. "Kirana, I wish to speak to you about your Jedi training. I know your duties have very much limited your time, but I only need to borrow you for a few days," he spoke calmly and slowly.

"We need to go to Ilum to build your lightsaber, and then we can take your trials, probably on Corellia as I did," he continued. "As soon as you can make the time I am ready."

The constant swirl of the stars in hyperspace acted as a perfect background for Renn to be left with his thoughts. At this point, he was busy going over the short duel he had with Forn Dodonna.

He snorted at the quick defeat. Even though she told me herself, I underestimated her. Probably some stupid male stereotype thing I've still got to get over--being overprotective of women. He rubbed absentmindedly at the back of his head, where he fell rather roughly onto the mat. Plus, she used those feminine wiles of hers--no weapon available to a woman like a sudden kiss. Renn practically slapped himself.

Renn, you idiot, you must have fallen harder that you think. Get that idea out of your head--now. Stop mooning like some naive 14-year old, and use your brain. She's the Vice-Admiral, you're her lowly bodyguard and aide. Not a good set-up for a relationship. As if to conclude the single debate, the stars elongated as the Warwitch appeared in the Selvaris system, reasonably close to a Mon Cal cruiser there, the Freedom's Reprieve.

Hey, for once I'm not being tracked by an obscene amount of weaponry! That's a welcome change. He hailed the cruiser, requesting a meeting with Admiral Sunrider.

"Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges!"

((Renn - Freedom's Reprieve was 'ordered by Forn to go on exercise... Kira is in the mountain base on the planet.))

Kira looked up from finishing her meal as Onderin came in.

"Master Starlisk, that is one thing I wanted to speak with you about but there is also another. Please sit down."

She indicated the chair opposite her and poured him a fruit juice from the chilled bottle that had been placed on the table by the kitchen aide. She then used the Force to levitate in a little packet through the open door from her office. She let it float infront of her Jedi Master and stood up from the table, giving him a sharp salute.

"Congratulations Colonel Starlisk. "

Kira then sat again, picked up her glass and raised it in toast to the new Colonel, winking at him as she did so.

"Now that that is out of the way... I have managed to get a few days leeway for the training, although we can't take too long. There is a battle to plan and while Forn is ... exercising the troops, we have that time to train. I'll leave Captain Ripley in charge of the base."

Her comm unit beeped indicating a message and she answered the comm, telling the officer on the outpost to relay to Forn's bodyguard, Renn Hamis, where to land in the base hanger. She notified the hanger that he was coming in and to escort him to her quarters once he arrived.

"No rest for the wicked... if you'll just excuse me a moment Master Starlisk, I'll just get changed. As it is probably an official matter I guess I'm not off duty any longer."

She headed into her master bedroom to get changed, closing the door and selecting a black outfit with multiple pockets. If they were leaving for training straight after this, she would need to be in something she could train in and not be recognised for who and what she was. In this plain black, multi pocketed outfit, no-one would note her for being the Admiral and new Leader of the Rebellion or a Jedi. She slipped her training saber back into one of the pockets in her trousers before placing her blasters back on her hips. This too would serve as to disguise who she really was.

She headed back into the other room to again speak with her new Colonel and to wait for Renn to show up.

Renn couldn't shake the feeling that he had just screwed up slightly. As if to confirm it, Renn received an encrypted comm from Dodonna's fleet to meet with her at Artus. Oh well. Such carelessness would not happen in the future.

Keying his comm, he hailed Selvaris Base, sending an encrypted textdoc of Dodonna's fleet's movements, with orders to present it to Admiral Sunrider only. Renn brought the Warwitch about, quickly escaping Selvaris' gravity well, disappearing into hyperspace.

Onderin's new promotion came as a bit of a shock to him, but he figured that it would've happened eventually anyway. Any possibilities of him leaving the Alliance anytime soon to focus on being a Jedi were eliminated from his mind.

He really hadn't been considering them all that much anyway. He would just have to find a way to get another apprentice through the Rebellion. Being lucky enough to get the first one so easily had been quite a blessing, and he thanked the Force for it daily.

Colonel Starlisk watched Kirana enter the room. A comm came in again and he listened as she was told that Renn was now leaving. "It looks like we can skip the official duty stuff and get right to the Jedi stuff," he said when she deactivated her commlink.

He picked up a datapad with instructions to be given to the mining crew when they arrived from Hypori to take care of his own duties and had it sent up to the moon. "I'm ready to go to Ilum when you are," he said.
