  1. The crystal in Ar-Pharazon's hand continued to beat, sanguinary and grotesque, oozing suppurating crimson light as it evoked the attention of spirits near and far. After a few more long, hesitant pulses, the light shrunk away, dimming to a barely perceptible ember, as though it were a bulb being drained of power from without. What is this...? A raspy whisper trembled through the bulkheads, but Ar-Pharazon's lips stayed still. He was not the speaker. This is not my reward! In the air above the barren floor, encircled by flickering obsidian candles, there coalesced a hazy phantasm of a massive Falleen male. Clothed in chains and rags he stood, with a few scarcely buckled tatters of military armor lashed to his shoulders. His wild hair was singed in a hundred spots, his gaze raking back and forth between the few assembled ritualists. Most of his body remained bare under the sparse threads he wore, a profane mockery of the dignity of the deceased. No... this is better. The apparition's shifting gaze fixed on Emily, and a leer spread across his face, barely discernible, but coming into greater focus... One chain for another. The shackles around the man's arms snapped, and the chains shattered into a thousand component links, spraying blue sparks across the floor, all too bright. In the crook of his freed left arm, the man was suddenly cradling another ghostly form, one that wasn't there just a moment before. One... triumph for another. The form in the man's arm was a young girl. Not being held. Being strangled. The eyes, desperate, but empty. She was dead, even in that faraway place. She wasn't the only one. One desire expended. Another forms. In the Falleen's eyes, for a split second only, there was reflected a vast, hellish array of corpses. All young girls, all murdered. Not supernaturally, not bluntly, but professionally. Bullets to the head, stabbings to the throat, a metal baton strike to the base of the skull while sleeping. Laid out in all their vulnerability, stripped bare, drained of life. Drool lingered on the man's lips. He was suddenly as real as anyone in the room, given new life by the dark side, charged by the fusion of Force energy and his own dormant desires. Empower. His free hand shot out and grabbed Emily by the throat. Empower. Feed. Life. Empower.

  3. Glowing with the friction of reentry, the great durasteel crate tumbled end over end through miles of icy Gala atmosphere before being intercepted by the volley of shells from the ground-based railguns. Being composed of highly resistant durasteel and not a low-flashpoint substance like, for example, balsa wood, the crate failed to oxidize when the volley struck it, and instead blew apart into a spray of thousands of pieces of shrapnel that erupted like fireworks into the sky above the Temple. .. THE SOUND OF THE CURSE WORDS that Merdir shrieked as he tore a ragged strip of upholstery from a chair to bind his burned hand rattled the windows of the cargo bay control room and echoed down the hallway through the breached door. He groped around blindly to find his metal cylinder multitool and slammed it into the cargo control computer's interface before collapsing into a chair, wincing. The cylinder spun in the terminal as it referenced data from the cargo manifests. "What am I looking for, Master?" it asked in its smooth voice. "Riches," snarled Merdir, clutching his hand. "Gold bars, bundles of cash, bearer bonds, blank checks. Crystals and **** that are worth a lot of money. Credit cards in other people's names. The hell do you think? **** like that." "I am afraid the cargo manifests list no wealth of that manner aboard this craft. It appears to be mostly farming supplies and miscellaneous electronics. Also, you might be interested in knowing that this ship appears to be being intercepted by starfighters for some reason." Merdir laughed. To him, it must have looked like an escort. From his seat in the control room, he could have no knowledge that the freighter was being hailed by the ground-based squadron, nor any replies that the ship's real crew was giving them. For all intents and purposes, Merdir, the ship's crew, and the starfighter pilots were oblivious to each other's situation.
  4. MERDIR SNARLED, and spat a huge glob onto the metal flooring of the ship orbiting above Gala. Wrenching the metal cylinder from the lock of the door to the transport's bridge, he clipped it quickly to his belt and trudged away. Despite the calm, quiet mood aboard the ship as most of its crew slept, the locks on the doors were as adamant as ever, and refused to budge without a metal-shearing display of force that likely would have awoken the entire crew. He slunk down the abandoned, red-lit hallways, cramped corridor by cramped, tight-winding corridor, until he reached his destination -- the tiny, claustrophobic control room overlooking the cargo bay. He rapped like a madman upon the semitransparent window looking into the control room, but knew beforehand that no one was inside. Spend a year on a ship and you start to get to know folks' patterns. No one was around; no subtlety was needed. "Chattur'gha," Merdir growled in a stentorian voice, and they cylinder at his belt responded. "Breach?" it asked, in a smooth, mechanical voice. "Right. Noise be damned." "Affirmative. Setting mode to Shear." Merdir had only the quickest second to rip the cylinder from his belt before a wicked-looking attachment unfolded from it automatically. The cylinder appeared to house a dagger-length hacksaw blade, which immediately began to buzz, then hum, then whistle with an increasingly rapid vibration. The blade grew red, then orange with inner heat before Merdir plunged it into the none-too-thick door to the control room with a sound more strident than at least three-quarters of Hell's bells. After a few minutes, he had carved a path wide enough to stoop through, avoiding the glowing edges of the hole in the door as he did so. But in straightening up, he burned his hand clumsily on the door -- roaring in pain, he dropped the metal cylinder and swatted the control panel with his free hand to clear his head. Unwittingly, he had triggered one of the craft's cargo release levers. Without the localized forcefield to contain it within the cargo bay, a titanic durasteel crate, containing triple-digit tonnages of supplies, broke free from its moorings and tumbled headlong into the upper atmosphere toward the Jedi Temple below, shrieking through the thin air with the forces of reentry-magnitude friction.
  5. THE SILHOUETTED FORM OF NYFE MERDIR dropped silently and stealthily to the metal floor-plates in the corridor of the interstellar transport orbiting high above Gala. Though bright day reflected below, it was the night shift aboard the craft; only a skeleton crew was awake. Hah, a skeleton crew, he thought. Would that the crew would all be skeletons. It was so stupidly ironic he had to smirk. His rough hand reached out toward the heavy door from the corridor to the bridge. Tugged the latch, found it held fast. Locked. "Chattur'gha." The voice had a sound you'd expect from a rusted industrial fan that hadn't been switched on in years. Rough, cracked, broken, and unbearably unstable. "Yes?" However, the reply was smooth and mechanical. "Lockpick." The harsh voice again. "The subtle one?" "No." "The violent one?" "Not this time." "I'm sad." At Merdir's side, the long, smooth cylinder creaked and whirred, a chillingly slender steel proboscis sliding from its reverse side. Merdir slung the entire apparatus from his belt and jammed it haphazardly into the mechanical lock on the bridge door. "Break it." The whirring from the cylinder increased for a moment, and suddenly stopped with the crack of splintering metal. Pulling the pieces of the lock out of the door, Merdir slung the tool back to his side as a confused voice from beyond the door swore explicitly. "Watch out, you woke him up." The smooth voice this time. Teasing. "Don't give a ****," Merdir replied. He gripped the latch with both hands, swinging the metal bridge door open as he vaulted into the room. At the transport's long control interface sat a single disheveled man, his eyes widened in sudden alarm, a dirty magazine in one hand and a steaming cup of coffee in the other. A single movement and Merdir had the man by the throat, the cup crashing to the floor, all screams of alert crushed into strangled gasps. Just as the man's eyes began to roll into the back of his head, Merdir released his grip, grabbed the man by the hair, and slammed his neck down through the control stick of the ship, impaling him through the trachea. He continued to struggle for a few minutes, making pathetic gurgling sounds as his lifeblood gushed to the floor and Merdir made himself comfortable in the man's former seat. The transport was on a re-entry course upside down above Gala, with the great viewport on the bridge pointed straight down -- the first thing Merdir noticed was the gigantic plume of ugly black smoke trailing from the surface of the planet. Merdir muttered to himself for a moment. Why couldn't whatever calamity that happened down there have purged the life from this ship as well? He stopped suddenly and blinked. Maybe it could. He had the cylinder at his side out and plugged into the computer's droid interface module in half a second. "Where's this ship going?" Chattur'gha spun the module. "Autopilot course. Down to the origin of that fire." "The hell's down there?" "A temple. Must be a religious ceremony getting out of hand." "Shut up." A strident, half-panicked voice screeched from the bridge speakers. "Transport vessel, abort re-entry! We've had a small plane crash into our facility. It appears to be an accident but we need medical supplies before we can handle any more routine traffic!" "Tell them we have no voice." Merdir's growl sounded even more annoyed than usual. Chattur'gha began to telegraph a reply to the temple down below: VOX DISABLED, ONLY TTY AVAILABLE "Peel off, transport! We can't take you!" The voice on the speakers was practically at a scream. "Tell them we have... help or something." Chattur'gha telegraphed: WE HAVE DOCTORS "Good," Merdir rasped. Then added: WE ARE A SHIP OF DOCTORS, FROM THE MEDICAL PLANET CADEUCEUS PRIME. WE WERE BORN AND RAISED TO DOCTOR THEE. MAY OUR GREAT GOD DOKH-TORRH GUIDE US TO YOUR WOUNDED. "Little over the top." Luckily, the panicked comm operator on the ground didn't seem to notice. He was most likely in shock from the attack. "Well then, hurry the hell up and get down here! Land anywhere, go!" Less than ten minutes later, the transport was cruising onto the Temple grounds, the viewport obscured by rancid smoke and flames. Tiny people scurried about the premises, flowing in and out of small fleets of ambulances emblazoned with bright red crosses. Men helped obviously crippled women, their faces obviously contorted in pain even from the view of the descending craft. The transport turned until it was hovering just above the triage center. Merdir cackled at their agony, so distraught as they were while he was yet so hale and fertile. Chattur'gha knew what to do, but couldn't. "Master, I cannot turn this craft's guns upon the crowd of wounded. This vessel is unarmed." Merdir smirked. "Thanks for trying. Blow the fuel tanks." Chattur'gha whirred for a long moment. With a sound like the final shot of Armageddon, the hovering transport blew apart in a rippling, searing explosion, directly above the crowds of people tending to the wounded. Showers of shrapnel accelerated to supersonic speeds tore through the canyon atmosphere, shattering fragile flesh and bone even before the booming concussion and flames incinerated the triage center in an inexorable hellstorm of fire.
  6. NYFE MERDIR licked his fingers one last time, wiping his knife free of stain before sheathing it in one swift movement. As quickly as he had started, he flung the massive chunk of chilled meat, now missing several titanic bites, back into a long, stainless-steel drawer in the refrigeration unit and stalked back into the dimly-lit halls. It was not the first time he had stolen from the transport ship's food stores. In fact, it'd be a stretch to say that he had done so fewer than a hundred times. After all, he had been a stowaway on the ship for nearly a year now. Lacking a home, lacking true employment, Merdir had assumed the life of a vagabond, and with no real task on the Falleen homeworld that he felt himself suited for, he had burrowed deep into the bowels of this very craft as it made a resupply stop at a spaceport, and had simply never felt like disembarking. The crew knew he was there, of course. Numbering only a few dozen, they would be hard-pressed to ignore when entire sides of beef went missing from the freezers. Or when weapons lockers turned up empty, their ammunition caches pilfered or strewn about the room. Or even when one of their own number went missing. Merdir had dined upon the flesh of human beings on at least four occasions over the past year, and while he did not always relish doing so, he also had to admit that it was not exactly from necessity. After all, frozen food got old. And sometimes it was just too much fun trying to find a place to hide the skeleton. Or was that "hide"? The time the first mate found a dessicated, mauled corpse stuffed headlong into his dresser, leaking entrails over his undergarments, had proven to be a near-unending source of amusement whenever Merdir reflected upon it. Try as they might, though, the crew could not dislodge Merdir, not during flight or at ports of call. Whenever a security team came aboard to look, Merdir would simply tap his nearly-buried Force talent to make them look the other way, or forget why they had bothered to search the craft. But now, orbiting some three hundred kilometers over the planet Gala, the crew of the transport cared more for simply completing their supply run to the planet then for angering their skulking stowaway. Merdir snarled to himself and pulled out a bundle of wires from the wall. The corridor went dark, and he quickly ripped a maintenance grate from the wall and climbed into a ventilation duct. Though the ship had been both bed and breakfast to him for a long time now, he was beginning to feel the need for a change of pace. With subtlety failing him as he crawled on loud elbows and knees through the metal shaft, he made his way toward the bridge.
  7. I suppose it's technically not a sentence in that it has no verb and direct object... maybe it's more like a really long noun phrase. But hey, even I didn't read all of it.

  11. _____________________________________________________________ PART I. QUESTION II. _____________________________________________________________ If it be in accordance with the Catholic Faith to maintain that in order to bring about some effect of magic, the devil must intimately co-operate with the witch, or whether one without the other, that is to say, the devil without the witch, or conversely, could produce such an effect. And the first argument is this: That the devil can bring about an effect of magic without the co-operation of any witch. So S. Augustine holds. All things which visibly happen so that they can be seen, may (it is believed) be the work of the inferior powers of the air. But bodily ills and ailments are certainly not invisible, nay rather, they are evident to the senses, therefore they can be brought about by devils. Moreover, we learn from the Holy Scriptures of the disasters which fell upon Job, how fire fell from heaven and striking the sheep and the servants consumed them, and how a violent wind threw down the four corners of a house so that it fell upon his children and slew them all. The devil by himself without the co-operation of any witches, but merely by God's permission alone, was able to bring about all these disasters. Therefore he can certainly do many things which are often ascribed to the work of witches. And this is obvious from the account of the seven husbands of the maiden Sara, whom a devil killed. Moreover, whatever a superior power is able to do, it is able to do without reference to a power superior to it, and a superior power can all the more work without reference to an inferior power. But an inferior power can cause hailstorms and bring about diseases without the help of a power greater than itself. For Blessed Albertus Magnus in his work De passionibus aeris says that rotten sage, if used as he explains, and thrown into running water, will arouse most fearful tempests and storms. Moreover, it may be said that the devil makes use of a witch, not because he has need of any such agent, but because he is seeking the perdition of the witch. We may refer to what Aristotle says in the 3rd book of his Ethics. Evil is a voluntary act which is proved by the fact that nobody performs an unjust action, and aman who commits a rape does this for the sake of pleasure, not merely doing evil for evil's sake. Yet the law punishes those who have done evil as if they had acted merely for the sake of doing evil. Therefore if the devil works by means of a witch he is merely employing an instrument; and since an instrument depends upon the will of the person who employs it and does not act of its own free will, therefore the guilt of the action ought not to be laid to the charge of the witch, and in consequence she should not be punished. But an opposite opinion holds that the devil cannot so easily and readily do harm by himself to mankind, as he can harm them through the instrumentality of witches, although they are his servants. In the first place we may consider the act of generation. But for every act which has an effect upon another some kind of contact must be established, and because the devil, who is a spirit, can have no such actual contact with a human body, since there is nothing common of this kind between them, therefore he uses some human instruments, and upon these he bestows the power of hurting by bodily touch. And many hold this to be proven by the text, and the gloss upon the text, in the 3rd chapter of S. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians: O senseless Galatians, who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth? And the gloss upon this passage refers to those who have singularly fiery and baleful eyes, who by a mere look can harm others, especially young children. And Avicenna also bears this out, Naturalism, Book 3, c. the last, when he says; ”œVery often the soul may have as much influence upon the body of another to the same extent as it has upon its own body, for such is the influence of the eyes of anyone who by his glance attracts and fascinates anothers.”
  12. I call it HEXENHAMMER! Please be kind in your reviews. THE FIRST PART TREATING OF THE THREE NECESSARY CONCOMITANTS OF WITCHCRAFT, WHICH ARE THE DEVIL, A WITCH, AND THE PERMISSION OF ALMIGHTY GOD _____________________________________________________________ PART I. QUESTION I. Here beginneth auspiciously the first part of this work. Question the First. _____________________________________________________________ Whether the belief that there are such beings as witches is so essential a part of the Catholic faith that obstinately to maintain the opposite opinion manifestly savours of heresy. And it is argued that a firm belief in witches is not a Catholic doctrine: see chapter 26, question 5, of the work of Episcopus. Whoever believes that any creature can be changed for the better or the worse, or transformed into another kind or likeness, except by the Creator of all things, is worse than a pagan and a heretic. And so when they report such things are done by witches it is not Catholic, but plainly heretical, to maintain this opinion. Moreover, no operation of witchcraft has a permanent effect among us. And this is the proof thereof: For if it were so, it would be effected by the operation of demons. But to maintain that the devil has power to change human bodies or to do them permanent harm does not seem in accordance with the teaching of the Church. For in this way they could destroy the whole world, and bring it to utter confusion. Moreover, every alteration that takes place in a human body - for example, a state of health or a state of sickness - can be brought down to a question of natural causes, as Aristotle has shown in his 7th book of Physics. And the greatest of these is the influence of the stars. But the devils cannot interfere with the stars. This is the opinion of Dionysius in his epistle to S. Polycarp. For this alone God can do. Therefore it is evident the demons cannot acctually effect any permanent transformation in human bodies; that is to say, no real metamorphosis. And so we must refer the appearance of any such change to some dark and occult cause. And the power of God is stronger than the power of the devil, so divine works are more true than demoniac operations. Whence inasmuch as evil is powerful in the world, then it must be the work of the devil always conflicting with the work of God. Therefore as it is unlawful to hold that the devil's evil craft can apparently exceed the work of God, so it us unlawful to believe that the noblest works of creation, that is to say, man and beast, can be harmed and spoiled by the power of the devil. Moreover, that which is under the influence of a material object cannot have power over corporeal objects. But devils are subservient to certain influences of the stars, because magicians observe the course of certain stars in order to evoke the devils. Therefore they have not the power of effecting any change in a corporeal object, and it follows that witches have even less power than the demons possess. For devils have no power at all save by a certain subtle art. But an art cannot permanently produce a true form. (And a certain author says: Writers on Alchemy know that there is no hope of any real transmutation.) Therefore the devils for their part, making use of the utmost of their craft, cannot bring about any permanent cure - or permanent disease. But if these states exist it is in truth owing to some other cause, which may be unknown, and has nothing to do with the operations of either devils or witches. But according to the Decretals (33) the contrary is the case. ”œIf by witchcraft or any magic art permitted by the secret but most just will of God, and aided by the power of the devil, etc . . . . ”
  13. I would argue that my contribution was a masterpiece in the field of "assertive revision". I simply examined the underlying subconscious themes of your work and kneaded the language until they surfaced. It's what you always intended it to be.
  14. I dunno, I'm just gonna take a wild guess here, but I'm thinking that if I'm registered for six years with a total post count of 156 (that's an average of roughly two posts per month, if you're a stats sort of person) I'm not exactly, uh, in it to try to run up my post count.
  15. (OOC: I can see why people in earlier threads praised Ara and Hale for being the only Jedi who actually act like Jedi. The fact that there are lightsiders around who apparently think that decimating their own structures to kill someone without any investigation into the matter is the correct way to act is a testament to the inferiority of the lightside players. It also reminds me of why I quickly lose patience with the game itself. Did it ever occur to you that I might not be "after" something material, but rather just looking to cause an interesting conflict resulting in mutual character development? Your way of solving problems is depersonalized, uncouth, and the anathema of good storytelling. Kudos to you, Talon, for being formal about all of it. Oh, and by the way... Assume I'm hiding in your temple now, masking myself. Watch your backs. I can wait a long, long time.)
  16. (OOC: Well now. This reminds me of a couple artists working on a mural, you know, just painting elaborate scenes of their own peaceful accord, and then some guy walking down the street thinks it's funny to take a black permanent marker and just streak down the entire length of the mural, ruining both it and its extensive setup instantly. Nice telekinetic trick there, Aryian. You like mine?) The enveloped man in black reaches up with the Force... (OOC: You attempted to move a mass of several hundred pounds with incredible acceleration.) ...curls the invisible fury of dark energy around the body of Aryian, nestled within his ship... (OOC: Watch me move a mass of just a few pounds with the same acceleration.) ...and telekinetically slams Aryian's brain against the inside of his skull. The force of the unseen impact causes instant and fatal hemorrhaging of the frontal and parietal lobes, resulting in instant paralysis and disruption of all five senses. Aryian's brain is twisted around upon its stem by the impact, severing the blood vessels of the medulla and reticular formation and resulting in an instant and irreversible flatline of all vital signs. (OOC: Play fair, and I will too.) The assailant drops from midair and catches himself on a rafter, crawling back into the window.
  17. (OOC: Talon, I may have Darth before my name, but I'm not a Sith. Ask the Sith IC if you don't believe me.) The interloper was a fearsome sight. Bristling with weaponry, he stood over seven feet tall. Rifles poked from his combat vest and teemed from his flak jacket. The hilts of swords, knives, and one odd light-weapon caused his belt to sag. Caked in dirt, covered in blackened camouflage paint and grease, and rife with the scars and slashes of a thousand mortal combats, he stood, wild-eyed, facing Talon Flick. His reptilian Falleen skin was barely visible under these black badges of battle. For several long, long moments he stood there, facing the kneeling guardian. Slowly, deliberately, he held up the sniper rifle with its shattered barrel. With one massive hand, he unscrewed the modular barrel from the rest of the weapon, and tossed it aside. Without looking, he pointed the weapon behind himself, toward the Dojo, and fired a staccato burst of a half-dozen rounds into the distant, prostrate crowd. Just to prove that the assailant had not fully destroyed the weapon. Point proven, he brought the rifle around again and hurled it far off into the underbrush. He's not what you came for... came the voice from the Falleen's side, unobtrusive and vicious. If the man heard the voice, he gave no indication that he had paid it any heed. He crept toward Flick. Just why did you come here? Satiate yourself, beast. Find them. Devour their nascent wisdom. The voice upon the Falleen's belt continued to croon. He took one more unsteady step toward the kneeling exile. This is not our way-- The black-clad assassin screamed, a titanic ululation that reverberated off the stone walls of the Dojo. He dove to his own right as if compelled by a poltergeist, tearing the multishot crossbow from his back and aiming it in Flick's direction, but not AT the man, rather over his shoulder... With a blistering crack like the sound of a bone shattering, the weapon fired. Ten steel quarrels blasted from the front of the bow at speeds approaching thrice the speed of sound, shrieking off into the forest and splintering through mighty oaks. With an unfathomable urgency in his eyes, the man screamed again, turned on his heel, and bolted toward the Temple with Force-augmented speed. In one mighty bound, he saulted up the side of the structure and clambered into a window like a spider, vanishing from view.
  18. Pushing one last obscuring frond out of his way, the predator stepped onto freshly manicured grass and into full view of the Jedi outpost. Had his eyes been open, he would have seen all manner of peaceful dealings; students and masters alike paced the natural domicile with vigor and intent, and the prevailing atmosphere was good and cordial and pacifying, and all manner of other adjectives that were an anathema to a Sith. A Sith would have callously laughed at the spectacle played out in front of him, and set to work burning the premises immediately. This man, in his earlier days, would have instantly taken out a large-caliber machine gun and begun to fire at everything in sight, simply for the sheer unadulterated pleasure of inflicting misery, without any regard for "Sith ideals" or anything that outworn creed would propagate. The man who stood on the grounds of the Jedi Dojo this day was animalistic and world-weary, not the same as the man who had assassinated Jedi Masters for entertainment, dueled Sith Lords for a challenge, and sniped nightclub patrons from darkened windows in the tallest spires of Coruscant. However, he was not all that much different. In one fluid move, the practiced weaponsmaster slung the sniper rifle from off his back, flipped the weapon over to full auto, and slammed a magazine of 7.62mm rounds into the gun. With a gurgling growl in his throat, he opened fire on the crowds. A cacophany of screams filled the morning air amid the sounds of bullet impacts and the clatter of shattering glass. At the shooter's belt, Chattur'gha became awakened by the sound of the gunfire.
  19. As the Maleficus emerged from hyperspace, its pilot, immersed in the scent of the spiritual blood he was following, paid no heed to the natural beauty of the home planet in front of him. Upon his subtly Force-enhanced retinas, the citadel of the Jedi shone from a thousand miles below. Brilliant rays of incandescent energy, invisible to the eyes of the masses, blazed from the surface like spotlights -- the ever-watchful minds of the Jedi, attuned to space, searching for invaders. As the pilot guided Maleficus around the Force waves with celerity, he drew ever closer to the atmosphere of the planet, and to the cluster of brilliant souls in the center of the Jedi lair. He was the moth, and they were the flame. Upon hitting the stratosphere, the pilot of the black Headhunter killed the craft's engines and electronics, sending the little snubfighter into a dead freefall toward the forest canopy. He guided the craft in over the trees like a glider, easing the rate of descent on a gentle thermal from a field and flaring the craft so as to set it down, hidden, in a thicket several miles from the Dojo. His frenzy grew as he clambered from the vehicle's cockpit, knowing that the bleeding energy he sent would reach its terminus just a few blessed miles away... All manners of weaponry did the man take with him. The sniper rifle. The multishot crossbow he had used to assassinate a Jedi Master at the Master's own wedding. A scattered array of energy rifles and pistols, secreted away in his belt loops. Chattur'gha, Lord of Flesh. The swordbreaker gauntlet. Several pounds of high-yield plastic explosives, which he kept "just in case the situation ever demanded it". Fragmentation, flashbang, and electromagnetic pulse grenades. Several knives, some of which were serrated. A wakizashi and tanto. A .357 magnum in his vest pocket. A double-bladed foldable axe. Tungsten-weighted throwing hammers. He contemplated turning Chattur'gha on, but realized he had no need. In the bright midday sun, he looked to the heavens and closed his eyes tight, and then turned, and followed the Light.
  20. The pitch-black Headhunter named Maleficus follows the trail of Avararda's vessel through hyperspace toward Borleias.
  21. The black-clad figure spat into the sand. A small wisp of smoke rose from the pebbles in response. The Force-users had fled to a ship some distance away, using augmented speed to evade the rifle of the predatory man. Though the sandy dunes had provided the two no measure of cover from the figure's sniper rifle, he had elected not to raise the weapon against them. They had been foolish, and young, and before he would kill them, he would impart upon them the wisdom of the nature of nature itself. He could feel them already growing wiser. The two Jedi had witnessed a great slaughter on Ryloth, an unnatural hecatomb that saturated the air and satiated the latent foul spirits that simmered in the desert sky. In seeing their friends cut down by Sith, fed to the maw of Hell or abandoned to the ether, the two would trade parts of their living, bleeding souls for the knowledge of a little piece more of life's inherent pain. The writer who referred to the knowledge of the Number of the Beast as "wisdom" had no idea how truly right he was. Light-side energy trickled in the wake of the two Jedi as they fled Ryloth, bleeding from the souls of the afflicted. The predator followed the ship of Armiena, Camsie, and Avararda through the howling turbulence of hyperspace... ...tracking them by the scent of their grief.
  22. As the sun set on Ryloth, the only light that could be seen on the dirt-caked face of the figure crawling through the vegetation was the reflection of overhead turbolaser fire, as Republic and Imperial ships traded volley after volley of gunshots, extinguishing thousands of unremarkable lives every minute. Biologists on many planets, of which Ryloth was no exception, have made note of the peculiar behaviors of natural animal predators on battlefields after a large war has been fought. Oftentimes, when the wreckage of vehicles destroyed in the melee still burns, and fallen soldiers still cry out from mortal wounds, even the predators that have been wounded by stray weapons fire stagger onto the bloody plains, driven by the scent of blood and by the presence of stragglers, hoping to gorge themselves on living things. The black-clad crawler was no exception. More animalistic than anything, he lashed out with his mind in furiously coarse strikes to clear his path of obstructions. Shocks of energy shot out from all parts of his body at odd intervals, blasting away tree limbs and setting fire to underbrush. He smelled a meal far more pungent than meat -- the savory soul of Force-users, and the tingle of residual energy in the air. He became quiet, and the energy strikes ceased, as he drew nearer to his quarry. From the clearing where Camsie and Armiena dwelt, in a copse several dozen yards away, a pair of black, silent eyes watched. The figure slowly began to assemble a large, stocky, complex rifle.
  23. As the Imperial dropships and the accompanying barrage of beam fire lanced through the Rylothian atmosphere, a black snubfighter tore out of hyperspace in the ionosphere and fell into the slipstream created by the repeated space-to-surface weapons fire. Unnoticed by the sensors of both the forces of good and evil alike, the ship, a Z-95 Headhunter bearing the IFF designation Maleficus, faded from the sensation of all concerned, becoming nothing but an imperceptible black twinkle among the stars. The Force pattern of the creature who rode the Headhunter, though, was far from imperceptible. As random and blackened as a Rorschach inkblot it was, imprinting itself surreptitiously upon the unconscious minds of the battle's actors as stealthily as the figures of the same name.
