I think the system is very simple, yet adds a new level of complexity.

Neutral Good
Chaotic Good
Lawful Neutral
True Neutral
Chaotic Neutral
Lawful Evil
Neutral Evil
Chaotic Evil
These alignments refer to the way a character goes about his/her ethical standard. For example, a Chaotic Good character might do something controversial in the name of a greater good (for example, crashing their ship into Imperial Center, killing many civilians but also the Emperor, in an attempt to destroy the greater evil), and a Lawful Evil character would use good to circumvent itself (for example, using the Senate to gain power for their own ends).
I just think it makes things more interesting than a flat black-and-white. :-D
