Background: Strong and athletic, Sapphire grew up on Hapes, surrounded by wealth, power, and status. She was arrogant and rebellious, but despite her upbringing, grew to detest the political machinations of her people. So she left, taking her sizeable inheritance with her, and became a pirate. She looks out for only herself…or so she tells herself. Her weakness is for her only two friends in the galaxy, her fellow Blood Gem pirates.

Full backstory, known to only her:

Alai was the daughter of a lower born woman who had been a handmaiden to a princess. She saved the princess' life, and as reward was raised to countess and given an estate when Alai was just 2. She used all she had learned of court intrigue to quickly begin to build her dynasty.

Much of her mother's hopes rested on Alai, as her mother intended to do everything she could to ensure their family became one of the foremost in the Hapes Cluster. Consequently, Alai was given the best education. Even from a young age, she showed a brilliance with technology and computer systems, programming her first droid brain when she was seven.

Alai thought her tutors boring. They never challenged her enough, and she found the court events they had to attend tedious. She was brilliant, and she knew it, which only exaggerated the deep-seated cultural arrogance of the Hapans. As a teenager, however, she learned to put her brilliant mind to use manipulating others to get what she wanted.

When she was fifteen, her mother entered her in a special program. The participants would receive additional education and beauty treatments, and as a result, become top contenders for the throne. By this time, Alai was utterly sick of the false life she had to present to the world. She entered the program only because she had to, and found the other contestants vapid and shallow.

One day, however, she met one of the guardsmen. They got to talking, and his frankness was refreshing. He invited her to meet him secretly the next night, and she agreed. Disguised, the man showed her the hidden underworld of Hapes.

Alai was astonished and immediately attracted to that lifestyle. Everyone did whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. There was still intrigue and backstabbing, but on a primal level. She felt blood stirring in her veins again, and from then on, she was hooked.

Going back to her noble life was much harder after that night. She slipped away whenever she could, seeking out seedy cantinas, dance and strip clubs, savoring the rush and hedonism.

Meanwhile, to her mother's delight, she was becoming a top contender for the crown. This drew the attention of her competition, however. Alai could take care of herself, but one night there was an assassination attempt (from Duchess Ta'ara, although she never learned the identity of her attacker). For her, that was the last straw. She didn't want to be queen, and it certainly wasn't worth her life. She dispatched her assassins, then fled home. Once there, she hacked into her mother's financial accounts and withdrew a sizeable amount of credits. She then proceeded to steal one of her family's ships and she blasted off, leaving behind her privileged life and the mother who only ever saw her as a means to power.

Free for the first time in her life, she headed to Nar Shaddaa. She immediately felt at home. Abandoning her birth name for the simple moniker 'Sapphire', she fell in with a small group of mercs, and used her skills to help pull off several major heists. She hadn't trusted the people she worked with, but it had been a time of learning what freedom really meant. It was during this time that she first met Jalos. He quickly became obsessed with her. They dated briefly, but Sapphire quickly tired of him and the poor way he treated her. They fought and she literally dumped him--into a trash compactor.

After a year on Nar Shaddaa she decided to pursue more education, and made her way to Bith. She took on a new name and identity, and enrolled in one of the top universities there to study programming and security. There, she studied under the best and brightest technical minds the galaxy had to offer, including Undino, creator of the Urithian Bith program. While she was eager to learn, she also threw herself more deeply into the seedier side of life, going to countless wild parties. Over the next several years, she earned two advanced degrees from two different universities, one on Bith, the other on Artus Prime.

While she was in her last year on Artus Prime, she met Kalen Lorell. He had drawn her attention immediately, and her interest only grew as she watched him completely wipe the table with his opponent at sabacc. They talked, and over the next few weeks, got to know each other better and better. She appreciated his brilliant and cunning mind, and he loved her spontaneous nature. Eventually, their friendship blossomed into romance. They were happy together for several months, and even lived together, until Sapphire graduated. Then they both realized their paths were taking them in different directions. Neither was willing to commit to a long-distance relationship and they broke up.

Upon graduation, Sapphire had multiple job offers, but hated the idea of being tied down. She had hacking skills and a fast ship, and so she vanished from the galactic stage and turned pirate. Not long after, she met Emerald and Ruby, and the three officially formed the Blood Gem Pirates.
